Oranges and Sunshine tells the story of Margaret Humphreys, a social worker from Nottingham who uncovered one of the most significant social scandals of recent times: the deportation of thousands of children from the United Kingdom to Australia. Almost single-handedly, against overwhelming odds and with little regard for her own well-being, Margaret reunited thousands of families, brought authorities to account and drew worldwide attention to an extraordinary miscarriage of justice. Children as young as four had been told that their parents were dead, and been sent to children's homes on the other side of the world. Many were subjected to appalling abuse. They were promised oranges and sunshine: they got hard labour and life in institutions.

Blue,

There is another very good/very sad fact based film that covers this subject,I dont remember the name of it at the mo.

It will come to me.

The Roman C Church as always played a massive part in this, and the appalling abuse of the children.

K9

This is a film I haven't watched for a few years - but stands up very well.

OK usual suspension of disbelief: Multi talented cop; multi talented police dog; no paperwork etc.

The only thing which really calls attention to age for me is the initial set piece where Bulishi would today have used a mobile phone.

A few months ago I watched Die Hard 2, which, like all the sequels, is far below the first film, but is now further sunk by the set up, that ONLY the tower can communicate with the airliners - almost seems quaint.

If K9 has never crossed your path and you fancy a police partner  / comedy / drama then this may well be up your street. Stand out moment for me is the car hire, classic.

Grown Ups

This is the first Adam Sandler film since The Wedding Singer that I have not turned off, and .....it's OK.

This is not a film that I will watch again, or buy, but I did laugh at moments throughout.

It is a bit too saccharin for me at times, and I would have preferred the director/writer to have avoided 'messages' throughout - not the vehicle for social commentary.

The Time Traveler's Wife

Not read the book.

I am usually VERY anal about whether a plot hangs together and works, and time travel in invariably screwed up - a la The Prisoner of Azkhaban, recent Star Trek et al.

So, how did they do? You know I didn't care. What DID capture me was the relationships, and the way they grew. I stopped analysing and invested.

I suspect that it doesn't work as SciFi, but I really don't care.

I LOVED the analysis of the courtship by the wife, and the uncomfortable underlying thoughts that bought into focus.

Re-watch material? Don't think so. Like The Sixth Sense I won't add this to my collection, too memerable ...and one that having lived through it wouldn't have the same impact the next time around,

If you haven't seen it I'd give it a go.

La science des rĂªves (the science of sleep)

Michel Gondry's follow-up to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Instead of mixing up reality and memories, he's now mixing up reality and dreams. Good film, bit foggy in places but that goes with the subject, wonderful visuals. The insults at the end seemed a bit out of character?

Mediocre, based on a play.

Limitless

With Bradley Cooper as a slacker who has access to pills that allow him to fully utilize his brain capacity. This was made with my hero Shia in mind and it's indeed the kind of shallow action thriller with pseudo-intellectual veneer for which he has become famous. However, photography and sets are spectacular, and Cooper is pretty good.

Cheers,

Hi EJS,

I watched a truncated version of Limitless a few weeks ago on Long-haul. I enjoyed it, BUT I thought the ending was a cop-out.

22 Bullets

French film about a retired mob leader who gets hit, and survives.

Stars Jean Reno, who is always watchable. I enjoyed it well enough, but won't be buying it.

The acting is very good, but the plot feels like a re-run of several well known movies, including The Godfather; and there were points that I felt unconvinced of, including the reason for the attempted assasination - after all this film is set in modern times, not the 1930s.

The Sorcerers Apprentice

Oh dear - AVOID.

This is a Disney film that actually has a reasonable cast, and then gave them an appalling mess of a script to deliver.

I felt that the Director was schizophrenic, swinging between trying to delivering a darker action movie involving sorcerers, and an Animal House comedy - and failed spectacularly on all counts.

I really don't think there is anything in this film for anyone.

Except in Godzilla. But yes, a fine actor.

Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus

Well, what is there to say... silly title but a masterpiece of filmmaking. A great example of how a good script, good actors and some deft camera work can transcend a small budget. CGI is used sparingly, but what there is, looks very good as well. Recommended!

'JAR CITY'...a neighbour returned from a trip to Iceland with a few Icelandic films.  This one is a gritty crime drama, and since the environs are so dark and atmospheric, you feel genuinely transported to another world.  Solid acting and directing, well worth a look.

Highly recommended

I and my little man were looking forward to this.

He has every other film.

Everyone said this was the best/most funny.

Bollacks is it,Its the least funny and has a stupid story-line.

Shame as JD PLAYING CJS is one of the best ever done imo.

The Rolling Stones KR was brilliant casting as his dad in the last and this film.

No time needed in make up.

My Sisters' Keeper

A real heart-string puller.

The 'twist' is not surprising, but also not really needed. It is a film where you can sympathise with all the family.

We all enjoyed this, although enjoy is NOT the right word.

Recommended.

My apologies. The last two images in my posts evaporated into the thin air after a week or so. Here is the last one:

Winters Bone

This is the best film I have seen this year.

It is courageous, consistent and utterly humourless, which is entirely fitting.

A view of American society that rarely makes it into the cinema, the US underclass in all its hopelessness and dreadfulness; do not look for a rose tinted ending, it is true to its narrative.

The breakdown of society, the replacement of humane kindred spirit and support by a code of silence and violence.

We have the same dreadful state of affairs in the UK, and it needs open debate and a sense of urgency to tackle it.

Worth your time.
