Geoff,

I found the film quite disappointing, especially after reading numerous positive reviews. The two main characters just kept staring into space (the driver when he was not busy taking someone out), not what I call strong acting. It was a typical crime story of things going wrong, extremely violent with surprising docile scenes of driving considering the talent the guy was supposed to have behind the wheel. The only thing I appreciated in the film was the understated cinematography, the night shots in particular.

Well it was a bit slow until the first 'gore' scene arrived. The 'staring into space' I assumed was down to the method style of directing. Gosling can act based  'The Ides of March'  so I guess he was doing what he was told. I did like the tension it created.

Not exactly a heat warming tale. Grim. Good movie, though.

Debs,

It was not that bad, the film dealing more with her present state of dementia and memories, missing her departed husband and not so much about her policies.

You are right though, I can't stand horror movies, get scared way too easily.

I was very taken with the 'Avengers' movie, so decided to catch up on the prequels: first Captain America and Thor, still should get Hulk and the two Iron Man movies. Of all these, I only saw Iron Man 1 in the theatre.

Cheers,

Make sure it's the second Hulk film the first one should never be allowed anywhere near your dvd player

Steve, it's the one with Norton, right? I have seen the one with Eric Bana and I think it is a genuinely good movie, although it seems to use the hulk theme only as a coat hanger for its parental conflict based story Right now I'm more in superficial action mood.

Well that was exactly like the doctor ordered! Remarkable really how they manage to cream off most of the cheese and still leave all the nutritional values, i.e. turn a man clad in stars-and-stripes tights and turn him into a cool hero.

Next up (I'm doing them in reverse order):

EJ,

As pop-corn movies go I think Marvel have done a great job of keeping things at a consistent level. I too enjoyed the Captain America episode, while having rather low expectations.

The Hulk I think is a difficult character to deliver, which makes Joss Whedon's handling all the better - he allowed 'the beast' to retain some more human traits, and almost turned him into the heroic centre of The Avengers.

I think that Branagh did a great job with Thor.

Gina Carano worth it for her alone!

Another Marvel superhero movie with a heart, very well done.

Transformers 3. Epic, silly, and a workout for the entire system. Love it

ExcellentI have to say having finished this set. HBO (& Showtime for that matter) are not shy about sex and blood which is unusual for US TV series but warranted as it fleshes out the alternate reality this is about. I read the book a while ago so have to applaud the way the series holds true to the story so far.

Be warned he mumbles just as much in Iron Man & Iron Man 2 but again he makes these films just as enjoyable as the ones you have watched so far.

In a similar vein am revisiting these

Which I recall as good fun

Thanks Geoff - will be picking up Iron Man I & II tomorrow, and looking forward to them. I haven't seen Hellboy II, thought part I was very good though slightly heavy on the muppets (sorry - I mean practical effects creatures).

EJ,

I loved HBII, it is good to have a villain who you actually sympathise with.

Shame it looks like this will be the last one.
