Well, I wish I could say it is a good movie... but the blu-ray disc refuses to play nice with my Sony BDP-S760. It runs... but stutters, lots of posterisation and occassional lock-ups. And I tried two different discs!

Howard, brilliant film for the scifi nerd in me. I had seen it in the theatre, and it is so full of plot holes you can have long debates about what a lot of it meant, and why. Eager to watch it again to see if it holds up to repeat viewing, and it does - it's chock full of details I missed earlier.

Picture and sound quality of the bluray are both excellent.

On Sky anytime , excellent story and just how amazing are these "cartoons" or more correctly animations, so cool.

Posted on: 11 October 2012 by tonym

Whilst we're on animations, we watched this last night -

Very, very silly. We both thought it was hilarious!

BigH,

I realise that I am NOT the target audience, but I love children's films, but Puss-in-Boots left me cold.

....different strokes ..

tonym,

Took a friend's son to see this at the Cinema and thoroughly enjoyed it, esp. the scenes with Queen Vic.

I loved that one. I now laugh even just looking at the image. I'm chuckling as I write this.

The makers of this 2008 British scifi film were clearly inspired by Escape from NY/LA and all three Mad Max films. What I have not yet figured out, is whether they wanted to make this intentionally bad or if things just turned out that way. I suspect the former. In any case, very fit lead girl, completely silly story and hugely entertaining if occasionally a bit overboard on the blood, guts, and decapitations. And, refreshingly, not a zombie in sight.

Footnote

"Long-buried tensions erupt in this witty drama, which follows the strained relationship between a reserved Talmudic scholar and his ambitious son -- both professors at the same university -- when the father wins a prestigious award the son covets."

Headhunters

Good thriller.

I'm always a few months behind watching the big films but watched Drive last night, what a great film, very very cool, although I wasn't expecting the brutal violence, highly recommended though.

On Sky+:

Really silly but most enjoyable.

The Jack Hawkins 1952 film called Mandy.

On a Youtube stream in many parts.

I don't think it has been released on DVD. It ought to be. It is about a profoundly deaf child.

Dear George,

It's available from Amazon - £6.99.

Have you watched "The League of Gentlemen" yet? Another absolutely classic Jack Hawkins film.

Best,

Peter

Dear Peter,

That makes two to get before long!

I am wading through Hitchcock's Rebecca, and this is as sentimental as it is impressive - but for me too much of a melodrama as it goes ...

Not one for me to get though I remember it clearly from childhood.

But the chance to watch Mandy again in DVD quality is a nice wish fulfilled! Or will be!

Well after watching Rebecca, I can definitely say that one is not for repeated viewings!

But Mandy is worth watching more than once!

As for the League, well one viewing would be worth the price, seeing as there is no trace on Youtube!

Dear George,

I think you'll like The League of Gentlemen, and it's definitely one for watching again and again! Easily one of my all time favourite films along with "Private's Progress".

Two other obscure British gems fom the 60's: "A Prize of Arms" and "Calculated Risk". Both on DVD.

Best,

Peter

Amazing film about the heroes of the Mercury Space Program and the start of the US space program.

Das Boot, director's cut, on youtube.

Glad I did not buy the DVD. Probably the worst long film that I did not give up on before the end.

I agree with the author of the book on which it was loosely based, as being a,

"Typical American style flick ...."

Anyway that will save a bob or two when the time comes ...

Carnage

Based on a stage play, and that shows as the film takes place in a single room for the most part.

The story revolves about two sets of parents seeking to come to a resolution following an incident between their sons.

As the narrative moves forward the relationships spiral as the marriages, the world views and the ambitions of the protagonists come centre stage.

Loved the final shots.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Great dialogue well delivered.

I was really looking forward to a good horror the other night so watched Insidious, unfortunately it didn't deliver, set the scene great but just couldn't deliver at the end, it really didn't help that the main horror character reminded me from someone out of The Mighty Boosch.

Which begs the question, has anyone seen a good horror lately, is it possible to make a good one in this day and age or have we seen everything before.
