SuperLine Loading Thread.
Posted by: Julian H on 26 April 2008
Since there are now a few SUPERLINE's about and many are expecting them shortly I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread where we could all contribute our experiences.
Please keep all discussions on topic. The ultimate intention is to have a database of users opinion for each of the various cartridges being used.

quote:Does anyone have experience with loading on a Lyra Skala (and LP12/ARO)? I'm working with the stock plugs, and am using 500R and moving between 1nF and 5.6nF - both seem to have their benefits.
Did you try no plugs? Should be optimum for Lyra Skala output is probably on the high side for SL though, Helikon SL could be a better match.

I guess it won't hurt.
But Akiva's output is high as Skala and no plugs did not work that well with the Akiva.

A cross-post from the hdx thread in case you missed it. I demo'ed superline with two different modified airplugs for loading from a hiline cable to Gods@Naim on tuesday. They immediately heard the improvement, and will investigate whether it is possible to productionise some well-agreed values (eg 453ohm for dynavector, five hundred and something plus second plug loading for linn things etc).

Let's wait and see what happens with R&D's tests first.
I'm just glad it appears they liked it.
Kind regards,
Peter

Has anyone been able to do in depth listening tests for the loading values for a Troika?
Peter-
I seem to recall you thought you might have had a client's Troika in this summer to play with. Did you reach any conclusions on that front?
Thanks,
Bruce

I had a week of wonderful hours listening to my system. I'll let others who are more technical adjust the loading plugs, but I'm interested in Dynavector. I have the 500 and 5.6 in right now.

I didn't get enough time to pin it down to one loading value - sorry. But it was very similar to the Akiva IMHO so either 560R or 576R with 1nF. I'll have another listen when I get another Troika deck to set up.

Wolf, are you in los angeles?
Would like me to bring out the "Dr Pete & Dr Jon" super-special Naim Airplug 453 ohms, designed for Dynavector?
(to be super clear -- this is *not* an official naim product, prototype or anything else -- has nothing to do with the factory. But gods@naim have heard them and said they would be looking at it further (no promises of anything, of course))
Just being helpful, you understand <cackle>

It's figured, believe me. Airplug rules ok! I just hope it's offered as an option soon as I really don't want to chop up any more Hi-Line cables! It just makes the best even better IMHO.
What Jon and I heard was obvious using the 453R optimum loading for his XV1-s between metal and Airplug. Jon still has them and is able to do the demo.

Well this will be amazing, I've been hearing some fabulous things on my system now.

A quick update from me after a month using the 560R:
After my inital period of trying the 500R v 560R v 576R and coming to no firm conclusion but leaning towards the 500R for the 'live' feel I have just had a month or so living with the 560R and.....
I love the 560R's musicality and involvement - beautiful, real and full of groove/soul!!!!
So I will live with it for a couple of more weeks and then try the 576R for a similar period.
But I must say the SL has brought a new insight to my collection.

After a LOT of time playing around I now have the setup singing as I'd expect. The problem, an earth loop.

have just bought a superline for my humble lp12 with only a mm and it sounds just wonderful. did i say wonderful......mesmerising!!!!
it's powered off my 552, but hicap arrives next week as well as geddon (this is going to sound crazy.....because i want the boxes to look the same so the very capable lingo is off ) and also a 300 and 3 powerlines......i may well be approaching audio heaven.

Do you mean a MM cartridge? The SL is a MC only stage!

Buy an Armageddon because you prefer it but don't buy it so it matches you Naim visually; you may regret it....

Ah, I'd managed to lose this thread. Now I have found it again, its worth me posting a comment from Steve Harris, who does Naim's PR, just to round out the airplug issue:
"There is no plan to make these available and while we obviously cannot stop Naim owners buying Hi-Line cables to get the plugs we would not support them if they somehow broke them if they were using them in this non supported way etc. We would rather focus
owners' attention on good system setup, good turntable, arm and cartridge setup as these will deliver significantly greater benefits."
