SuperLine Loading Thread.

Posted by: Julian H on 26 April 2008

Since there are now a few SUPERLINE's about and many are expecting them shortly I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread where we could all contribute our experiences.

Please keep all discussions on topic. The ultimate intention is to have a database of users opinion for each of the various cartridges being used.

Have you removed the unused pin?
Posted on: 08 November 2008 by tonym
No... I'm going to do so right now Julian!

Pulling the unused pin is not always to everyones taste Tony, as it will smooth things a little.

Have fun!

Julian, try 470pF cap loading if you think 1nF is too much. - One in post to try.... Winker

Kind regards,

Peter

Hi Peter

Thats why I thought Tony would like it.

My 453 is definitely the best compromise for the Dynavector TKR but I noticed when playing "Nude" (!) the sound is slightly livelier but introduces some sibilance on certain female voices.

Nude and centre pin missing may be the optimal solution for Tony.

Thanks in advance for the 470pf plug, I can't wait! Smile

The more you fiddle around with loadings, the more you realise that whatever you use it'll improve certain aspects to the detriment of others.

Tony, if that is the case, it may be worth considering that there is a problem upstream (eg with turntable setup). What I found is that once the upstream issues are completely resolved any plug is detrimental with no improvements.

Initially, everything sounds wrong. Then, after a few moments it clicks. The music is back. Full of body*, flow etc...,

All of this is with 1nf, Akiva, Linn SE, T-Kable, BNC's

Julian,

I guess what I objected to with 57X vriants is that phatness.

Anyways, I ended up using a 590R plug with NO cap but plugging resistor in a cap socket which tamed some brightness yet kept the tune.

Now... for the Miyabi, I went back to the Phonocube as I could not get the desirable midrange off it, yet. I haven't fiddled with plugs at all on this one from the original 220R/no cap.

Hi Julian,

I second your remark of the bit to full body on the 576. I am right now on 562/1nf and still find it very enjoyable. IMHO it is a bit lighter and a bit crispier if that makes sense. I will give 470pf a try.

Yep, that's done the trick! Well done Julian, thanks! Big Grin

Kuma/Martin

Thanks for your feedback, just like to try the lesser capacitance value with the 576. I will report back on the 470pf as soon as I have it.

Tony

I can't take the credit for the centre pin mod. Of course, you can guess who can! Really glad it has worked for you. I guess it's a stopgap until the Air"loading"plugs are available Roll Eyes

Julian.

I forgot to add that the centre pin was removed from a 590R plug on mine.
Posted on: 09 November 2008 by Julian H
Were all at it now then Big Grin

Just out of interest Kuma, do you have a Cirkus bearing?

J
Posted on: 09 November 2008 by kuma
Julian,

No. Mine does not have a Cirkus.

I suspected that most folks don't dig a 590R might be because of it.

However, I have also tried the same plug on a Cirkused Linn and conclusion was the same.

The biggest surprise was plug it in a capacitor socket. By doing that I didn't need the 1nF plug with Akiva any more.

It made the overall presentation more cohesive to my ears.
Posted on: 09 November 2008 by Julian H
Hi

Yes, I did think the Cirkus may have had something to do with it.

I will try switching sockets but I tend to prefer using both plugs...., we'll have to see!

Julian,

Also, I prefer Akiva/ARO on the P3 over all than on a Sondek. ( Miyabi still rulz ) That's what I use the Akiva normally.

Not on the Sondek. On the Phonosophie P3.

But I did try the same setting on three decks.
A cirkused Linn with a 'Geddon, non-Cirkused Linn with a Lingo I (sans filter ) and Phonosophie No.3 with a Naim P3PS.

With the right loading on the Akiva, I now feel that the P3 doesn't need much appology albeit it still has a different presentation from the Linn.

Just plugged in the 560 + 1 today and it sounds bloody great! A big step up from the 500 IMO.

LP12/Keel/EkosSE/Akiva/SL/SCap

Well my trials continue with the 500R-560R-576R all with 1nf.

Those following my postings my remember that I am trying each one for a couple of months to really see which one I prefer living to.

As after initial A-B-C comparisons I loved features of all 3 but was leaning to some where between the 500R and 560R.

Well after a long spell with the 500R I moved to the 560R for a few weeks and fell in love with it...incredible!

Then a couple of weeks ago I moved onto the 576R...and I can say I loved it even more!!!!

Especialy as this week end I got the new Bob Dylan Bootleg Series Volume 8 and I was physicaly stunned how excellent it was on the 576R.

Bob was really there in the room and the band were just with him, if you get what I mean, the music, fealing and flow was great...with big smiles on my face and feet!!!!!

I did not try Bob on the 560R or 500R as I thought I was a convert to the 576R but then.....

I went back to David Gilmour Live At Gadansk and listened to it in the bath last night (one of my tests of how good things are) and whilst it was excellent it seemed to miss some fealing that I remebered from the 560R ...maybe there wis more detail on the 576R, esp. lead guitar was more in the front, but.....???

Anyway, I am carrying on with the 576R for a few more weeks then it will be Christmas and I will get some time off work and I may start deciding which I really really like but now I suspect it may be some where between the 560R and 576R rather than between the 500R and 560R.

So watch out David, at The SORG, I may be asking for a build of a 568R?????

But I am enjoying it!!!

Richard

p.s. And I wonder what difference a Hi-Line will make on the SL?????

Another interesting little fact which not many people know about (in Michael Cain's voice)

My test LP for SL loading of account of its general excellence of recording but slight sibilance on certain tracks is Eva Cassidy's "Songbird" on a Steve Hoffman remaster in 180G vinyl. Having removed said centre pin on my nakkid 456R, to eliminate most of the sibilance you need also to pull said plug out as far as possible without disconnecting it.

It doesn't completely eliminate the sibilance but you can hear Eva's a bit too close to the mike on these tracks. And how good is that? Smile

I just received the 470pF today. 576R/470pF could be exactly what I was looking for between 562R/1nF and 576R/1nF.

Martin,

I don't understand the physics but why not try something like a 567R/1nf if you want something between a 562R/1nf and and 576R/1nf?

Richard
Posted on: 11 November 2008 by Miller
Richard,

one could combine resistors to get the desired value, maybe I will give it a try. Right now all plugs I use are single resistor only. I was very curious about varying the capacity on SL hence I ordered the 470pF. After limited time and experience with it, I like it more than 576R/1nF. But who knows maybe 569R/470nF is the vertex value... Time will tell

have you received your 470pF now? I would love to hear your comment about it.

Yes, received today. Can't listen to it tonight though. I will report as soon as I can.

Hi everyone:

Looks like I will be getting a Superline so I'm asking if there are any definitive values that have been worked out for loading. I'm currently using a P75 MK2 on Dr T setting.

Hi

With what cartridge Timbo? Your profile indicates you using a 17D3. Is that still correct? Is it still on a P3-24?
