SuperLine Loading Thread.

Posted by: Julian H on 26 April 2008

Since there are now a few SUPERLINE's about and many are expecting them shortly I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread where we could all contribute our experiences.

Please keep all discussions on topic. The ultimate intention is to have a database of users opinion for each of the various cartridges being used.

Interesting report Julian. Good to see you have had chance to compare all the load plugs for the Akiva at last. Your findings are much the same as mine a couple of months ago: 576R with 1nF. It's good to have someone else agree this, as IMHO the preferred Akiva loading was not as easy to arrive at as the 453R for most Dynavectors, as that difference is more like chalk and cheese when compared to the 500R or 470R.

anyone using a Superline with a Benz Glider L2? Works well with a Stageline S, but seems more variables are at play with the Superline. Thanks,

Well Julian your post inspired me to pull out the 560 and put back the 576 (both with 1nF).

WOW Eek

Things definitely are sounding good. More detail-more emotion/better definition to the bass - and overall a "touch" slower in the presentation which presents a more emotive play of the music.

I think that it will stay for a while.

I have arrived!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well The SORG (David) was over yesterday and my system is now really signing even more than it ever used to…beautiful and really incredible music…thanks David!

I remain on the 576R with 1nF (LP12, EkosSE, Akiva, Keel)

I have lost the ’thinness’ and ‘shouting’ I was concerned about and I am now loving the detail, rhythm, flow soul and most importantly the music of the system!

The key improvements I recon were:

- Rebuilding the Fraim, ensuring everything was level and cables dressed
- Ensuring the speakers were solid
- Stylus immaculately clean – thanks SORG (green paper job followed by SC-2) for doing this and Peter for pointing it out. I have never used the green paper or SC-2 before but it really made an incredible difference (I have only ever use a stylus brush and audio-technica vibrating ‘thing’).

An interesting experiment was in turning the mat around, which The SORG do as a normal final check anyway, but it was really noticeable the difference in the two sides on my system now!

We also tried a HiLine on my Supercap and just when I thought things could not get any better they did. Hard to put my finger on it apart from just saying everything just sounded better, fuller, less granular and just, well, fantastic!

We also tried a PowerLine on the Lingo then Supercap for the SL (Lingo was better). Whilst there were improvements they were not as significant in my current rig as the HL. This I suspect is due to my system being powered by a set of 15am dedicated spurs utilising ‘unfused’ 15am round pin plugs (with dedicated CU, set up for 15amp, and earth), which is incompatible with the UK 13amp PL. So we could only try the PL on the house 13amp ring main (noisy?) or by using a trailing lead off a 15amp plug with a 13a socket onto a dedicated spur. Neither of these were ideal as they involved a compromise but there was a little improvement.

So eventually I will replace a 15amp socket with a 13amp one and try again – but I have to say in my mind the 13amp fuse in the PL may be a weak link compared to my 15amp set up….but I will see.

Anyway, I am ecstatic with the SL and 576 and need to find some cash for a HiLine now!

Hi Richard,

Glad to hear that things have improved.

Proper set up does usually make for more benefit than 'new' parts.

Seemingly little things like mat, belt, VTA and microscopic stability in your Hi-Fi system make for massive differences in performance.

In the case of the stylus, brushes don't get everything off.

Waxy deposits on the stylus tip need a flat slightly abrassive 'tool', i.e the green paper or similar. (bookmatch striking surface)

Anway, on the subject of Powerline on Lingo, I think you'd be better off with an Armaggedon and no Powerline.

I haven't heard a Powerline yet, and I'm sure it'll be a significant improvement but IMO when it comes to electronics, Linn should stick to turntables. Smile

Today I had a visit by my dealer to replace my Ekos SE. While he replaced the Ekos he tightened all the bits an pieces, did some adjustments to the arm, job done. I have to admit he is doing this for some decades, I am deeply impressed.

Using SL/SC/HL/576R/470nF this table sings like there will be no tomorrow.

I agree with you Craig.

I'll have a taste for Fosters next.

Stylus cleaning is more important than many realise! Glad you are now more sure about the 576R & inF for the Akiva. Smile

Thanks Peter and YES I am an Akiva 576R + 1nF user now and will start forgetting about it all and just enjoy the music!

By the way the HiLine has been a real bonus, is settling in well and the system is sounding beautiful.

I would recommend to anyone who has a SL with SC to try the HiLine, let it run in and enjoy!

Thanks to all,

Richard

Where can one get the magic green paper - in Canada - I always used to use it in the UK.

My swift search of Linn's website gave me "Your search for 'Canada' returned 20 results."

I imagine your local Linn stockist (or the Canadian distributor) should be able to provide.

Thank you Adam:

I keep forgetting we have a Linn dealer in Edmonton, I need some more record washng solution so will pop in.

Cheers

Just a quick note guys and trying not to hi-jack the thread.... The Superline price has dropped here in the UK as a result of the VAT changes and is even better VFM now at £1615.00. There is good news across the rest of the range too! Cool

Maybe one of you guys will start a thread in order to discuss?

Must dash,

Kind regards,

Peter

My 453 is definitely the best compromise for the Dynavector TKR but I noticed when playing "Nude" (!) the sound is slightly livelier but introduces some sibilance on certain female voices.

I've now dressed it! Slightly duller but smoother.

I've being trying nudity since we met last Wednesday and it's kept me off the streets (as you can see by the time of this post). I went nude and thought it sounded lively and leaner with a bit more space around each instrument, but after a couple of days I found I didn't like what it did. It gave an edge to the sound and took away the thumping part of the bass. I've tried tape around the plastic body and pulling the plug out from the Superline socket a little, but it hasn't helped. I've gone back to the clothed metal body plug and it sounds smoother and all the weight in the right places has returned. I think I'll stick to the original clothed plug. I tried the pin removed, clothed and didn't like that.
Posted on: 10 December 2008 by tonym
Since that posting I've moved to nude with centre pin removed, which I've settled on for the time being. Not loss of bass & removing the centre pin's taken off the edginess from female vocals.

We need airplug version, we need airplug version, we need...
Posted on: 10 December 2008 by count.d
I was thinking of trying nude with centre pin removed Tony, but once the pin's removed I can't go back.

I don't know the theory of the differences with nude/clothed, but I seem to feel the metal body acts as a vibration ground dampener for the resistors and plastic body. The metal body probably introduces it's own problems, but for me it solves others.

I was going to try covering the resistors only with heat shrink, but with the Airplug coming out shortly, I'll wait for that Winker
Posted on: 10 December 2008 by Cymbiosis
Yes, removal of unconected pin 2 does take a little of any edginess away. Equally, some people may prefer it left in place.

Nudity! Eek Whatever next...............! Winker

Either way, both pale into insignificance as compared to an Airplug - as demonstrated.

Nudity during music sessions is either a sign of age or too much time on one's hands, but it's great to try as long as no one catches you at it Big Grin.

I have just been playing with my new Superline. Kit is Rega P9/DV 17D3 S/L into a SuperNait /SL2s / NSub other source is CDX2/XPS2.

I have been using a DV P75 MK2 on Dr T setting. First off I configured the Superline on the "S" settings usually recommended for DV cartridges as per the Prefix. Instant improvement, very low noise floor and a lot more clarity. I let this run for 48 hours so it got settled in and last night decided to try out some of the other plugs.

In went the 453R which sounded nice, a little richer than the S setting but nice. I then tried the 470R, yep this is definitely the one. Much more clarity, very relaxing and yet very engaging. I went back to try the 453R just to make sure and although listenable, certainly not "there", I couldn't quite sink into the music, back to the 470R and all is well.

My advice when changing plugs is to have at least the front transit screw in place, not tight, but firm, it certainly makes things easier.

Music:
Meet me in London - Forcioni/Sciubba
Greatest Hits - Neil Young (Down by the river)
Quadrophenia - The Who
Debut Recital - Marta Argerich
Thomas Tallis/Lark Ascending - Vaughn-Williams

All transit screws are now out and the unit is in position and I await this evening to enjoy yet more vinyl.

Oh by the way, I am still stunned by the quality of the SuperNait its the amp that just keeps on giving :-)

Merry Christmas one and all from a very happy Tim
