Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin (1810-1849):  Ivana Gavric (piano)

Assortment of Mazurkas, Nocturnes, Preludes, Berceuse

I have had this CD for many months already and today was the second listen.  I will say that I enjoyed it much more today than my initial recollection of it was.  Not sure how that works but might prove why one listen is not enough to make a judgement (with some time in between)?  It is an OK CD but the major problem with it is that I am hooked on Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń at the moment and her style of playing is really in my ideal realm.  The one example is the Prelude in c-sharp minor, Op. 45.  I think the difference between the two is evidence enough for me with Popowa-Zydroń giving a somewhat ideal benchmark performance for me.  Also, Gavric is playing earlier Mazurkas and Popowa-Zydroń later ones but I think the edge again goes to the latter artist who has a remarkable way with the rhythm that just gives it a more compelling edge.  And there is the tempo issue for me where Gavric generally chooses a faster clip.

Greg Brown - In The Dark With You

The journey continues with exploring Greg's catalogue. This album from '95, and the review on Tidal, "Humorous and sardonic reflections on domestic life and aging, from a journeyman folksinger."

I'm enjoying the music.....

This is an absolute hoot! In addition to being a great listen, this is really fun. I am sure Greg Brown had his tongue firmly in his cheek when he wrote and recorded this. I couldn't help smiling the whole way through. Pretty sure it was Ewe who referred to Greg's wicked sense of humour. Well that comes shining through in this album. Very enjoyable.
