I mean the one that left you amazed, mesmerized, blown away etc... and started you on an interest in the Classics. Mine was this.... I'd tried a few pieces previously to this but nothing really hit me, so as I like to persevere with things before I give up I bought a few more CD's which this performance was among. I played it one night not really thinking much about it and not reading the liner notes to understand the importance of the performance at the time, within the first movement I...

On Quiet Tiger Kit has actually expanded the trio into a quintet, adding tenor sax/bass clarinet and cello on all but 3 of the 11 tracks. It's a lovely album, and I think Kit has an exceptional ear for melody and arrangement.  A melancholy...

Was having a nostalgia fest this afternoon, and dug out the CDs I'd made from my old singles collection.  I got rid of the originals (big mistake) way back in 1975 when I bought my Tandberg TCD310 and copied them all to cassette (source : Thorens...

Bach and Beethoven make every wrinkle in my heart light up like a beacon from the first note more often than not. But Mozart only evokes polite respect and admiration. That's not right !  It's got to be fixed. Mozart deserves more...

I have just finished watching some of the 1976 TOTP coverage on BBC4. Mentioned was a preponderance of Beatles tracks in the Top 30. How did this come about at the time? As an 11 year old my only memory from the time is hearing a DJ saying you'd think...

Tim Smith of Cardiacs fame is still in hospital 2 years after having a massive heart attack. A lot of noted musicians got together recently to make a tribute album, all Cardiacs songs but using their own interpretation. Tim Smith is a genius, I...

Just logged into their website, and am surprised and delighted that their catalogue is increasing rapidly. When I first downloaded as an experiment rock music seemed to be represented by Wings or the Kinks. Just spotted some of my favourites -...

In the spirit of South by Southwest this week, I highlighted this one to a friend: "She Left Me for Jesus"  by the young Hayes Carll.    In a world rich with irony, his one gets my vote. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyxEO9dqi44 And he...

Heard this lot (who are French Canadian) on Maconie's Freakzone the other week and bought the album. It's a little gem. What it is is hard to describe (and I'm not normally lost for words in this regard). If you started off with recent Stereolab but replaced the group with a chamber ensemble and added in a dash of electonics/dissonance to stop it being too saccharin, then that would be a starting place, though they're a lot more pastoral than Stereolab. Vocals male and female in English and...
