Music Room
I use to spend a few evenings each month with my brother-in-law and his wife. He has CD5,FC2,Nait, PSAudio speaker cables and Sonus Faber Concertos, on their stands. We mainly listen to jazz, and every now and then I hear things I like in his living...
When you begin to really listen to music, the whole world is your oyster. Everything is available. One day, you find that you have favorites, and have preferences. When that day comes, your options are circumscribed. If you listen long enough, there is...
Ok. It's recently been bought to my attention that I don't actually own any Cream. TBH, I'm not quite sure how that happened. Think I used to have them on tape, & they got lost somewhere in the mists of time. Clearly I need to rectify this. I've pretty much decided on Vinyl, as IMO, most stuff that was released on Vinyl sounds better on its original format. Also, a friend recently played a CD release of Fresh Cream & declared it awful. What I haven't decided on yet is... Mono or stereo. were...
I was watching TV the other day and heard a very nice voice singing a song on a car commercial. So I google the commericial and find the artist and buy her album on itunes.Rather than offer you a poorly written account of her music, I'll steal some...
A familiar criticism of those who build large disc collections is that one can never listen to all those discs. Here, at the risk of stating the blindingly obvious, is a short attempt to articulate why we accumulate so many discs when quite obviously...
Right, I've just finalised my end of year recital programme:Chopin; 4 Mazurkas, Op. 24Beethoven; Sonata, Op. 10. no. 3Combined they make up the 30mins required. So, the notes are pretty much there, so it's time to start listening (in detail) to...
Anyone else share my curious fascination with Pitchforkmedia, and specifically the album reviews?Considering it it a website that reviews a fair amount of music that I like it also seems to revel in delivering lambasting reviews completely against the...
Hi all,I'm interesting in hearing more from these guys.My dad recommended me Days of Future Passed about 2 years ago and it is easily one of my favourite albums of all time.A colleague mentioned I check out 'In Search of the Lost Chord' so I bought...
I bought the LP below a few months back but only got round to playing it the other day. Really enjoying it. So, I was wondering if anyone would recommend any of his other material (that's available on vinyl)? Also, I did come across two versions of Sea...
Over the last several months, I have gotten a crash course in European jazz, listened to a good bit of American Jazz I haven't heard before, and surveyed my own extensive jazz library, hundreds of albums collected over forty years.I am ready to say...
Lhasa died on the first of January at her home in Montréal.I thought this would be a good place to thank her for the great times spent listening to her music. Lhasa has a very special place in my heart as her music has been part of many...
Can anyone else please confirm/deny that Spotify is currently down?
from the '70s with his "Chicken Skin Band"?It was BBC4 last week, might be repeated or available on the iPlayer. A rare treat with some superb slide playing by a master.Joe
In an email from one of the people I occasionaly buy records from, they state that Classic Records is stopping production. Is this really true? Does anyone know?It is a very great shame if it is!james
EMI are reportedly hoping to tackle their debts by selling off Abbey Road Studios, which I think as part of our British musical heritage, is a huge shame.Any Beatles-crazed multi-millionaires out their?!
Of all of the complete cycles I’ve not heard yet, Michael Houstoun’s is one of the cycles I’ve been keenest to hear. The only problem is that finding the CDs at a reasonable price has proven impossible. The US distributor only lists...

I've recently been listening to the following: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chopin...6313730&sr=8-1-spell There are many recordings of the Rachmaninov and indeed, the Chopin. However, they capture both the sonatas in a rather intimate and very expressive way. Luganksy isn't one of my favourite pianists, but I was pleasantly surprised at this CD. He has a fantastic chamber ability. The Cello playing is very heartfelt and colourful. Dan
Doug Feiger, lead singer for The Knack, passed away at age 57 of cancer. My Sharona was a catchy pop gem that is still hummable today.
I have been blessed that I found the woman early on, and have had 36 years of that, but I would like you to think of the first rush of love you felt yourself. That first ringing of the gong is vivid in memory, no other experience quite equals it.I...
Rather than argue the point, I'm simply going to list my evidence. Please do the same :-)Angela Hewitt 2009 "Well Tempered Clavier" on HyperionZimerman plays Debussy's "Preludes" on DGG
No, I’m not revisiting his complete cycle or his subsequent recordings. I’m referring to how he plays it today, in person. Last Sunday (ie, Super Bowl Sunday), I had the good fortune to attend an all-Beethoven recital by Mr Kuerti....
