After better than a decade, the Gardiner/ORR Beethoven Symphonies are losing some luster, so I went out searching for a new Eroica. On GFFJ's recommendation, I got a 1955 mono by Klemperer with the Philharmonia. It came today, and got a good listen.The...

I've just got a copy of Hilary Hahn's 'Piano and Voice' album, with Matthias Goerne and Christine Schafer, and excellent it is too. It has two pieces from the Matthew Passion, which got me thinking that maybe I should get hold of the whole Passion.But...

I was having a bit of listening session this weekend and had a bit of a run through my fairly sizeable African music collection; and a fine evening listening it was too. From Mali to South Africa, Madagascar to Senegal. Remme Ongala, Ali Farke Toure,...

I have heard mention, from a salesman at a local shop, that in the US there are really only 7 pressing facilities and they're running pretty much around the clock. That demand has outstripped supply by a considerable margin and that there exists a...

I recently picked up the Pristine remastering of KoB. It sounds thinner and is more recessed compared with the Sony SBM version from 1997. Pristine says the Sony version is sometimes blurred and harsh in the lower midrange and their version is...

Hi.I know this is not strictly a music post but I'm a little flustered and could use some proper help.I have just bought a Yamaha keyboard, quite cheap but with a full key compliment and I want to learn to play it.All of which seems simple enough but...

I didn't get round to buying the LSO/Abbado version although I would like to hear it sometime.I bought a mono vinyl copy off eBay for £5: This is the USA cover although my pressing is UK. The record needs a clean but I'm sure it will clean up...

After comments by mongo I thought I'd start a "Bonuses" thread, (no not the bloody bankers again)!I'm fed up with recording companies that just dump any old stuff to make up the space. These seem to consist of "alternate" takes and studio "run...

Considering the probable makeup of forum members, and the albums that are often seen on the 'What are you playing now?' threads, I was wondering what album is owned by the most people on the forum?I think the likely candidates are: The Beatles 'Sgt....

For a while I had been worried that I'd imagined seeing Siouxsie, with Spizz supporting playing Kingston Swimming Pool, late 70s. The gig does not appear in any Banshees gigography I've searched, and as a swimming pool sounds a bit unlikely I...

How good is this live box set? A friend gave me a 'highlights' CD and it seems to be quite exceptional. Listening to it now. Is the quality of the playing and recording consistent throughout. My favourite live Miles Davis recording is the Complete...

This set of wonderful music arrived yesterday. Preston and Pinnock are on superb form and the recordings are exemplary. Three DG Archive CDs for £20. Marvelous! In the old days I had LPs [on EMI] with Menuhin leading the Bath Festival Orchestra in this music, but these new performances please me a good deal more. The music is at the forefront of Concerto style of the day [round 1740], and Handel's ideas about what a concerto is are very different from the ideas of Bach. History shows...
