I have found two recordings of this that are very pleasing and less contrasted than you might think considering the very different performers. 1. Philharmonia/Klemperer on EMI CD recorded in 1961 [deleted but may be found on Amazon.co.uk] 2. Berlin Philharmonic/Furtwangler, an HMV 78 recording from 1938, [easily found in an exceptionally good transfer on Naxos 8.110865] Both avoid hysteria, which Klemperer had something to say about in connection with Piotr Illych's music, and both carry a...

Hi all, I had a bit of a revelation the other night while listening to a CD from Sir Charles Mackerras & The SCO Beethoven cycle. When I first purchased this box set I'd been used to, though briefly, a more dramatic interpretation of Beethovens music from older conductors like Furtwangler and Karajan and Mackerras' style seem to be too fast and lacking in drama, I thought to myself how can someone get it so wrong, but now that I've own the box set for a few weeks I finally realised that...

I picked up a budget reissue of Brendel's 4 Beethoven Popular Sonatas (Pathetique, Moonlight, Les Adieux, and Appassionata) on Alto (1016) from the early 60's Vox cycle. I remember this cycle fondly from colllege days, and was intriqued that the Alto...

I've just been to listen to ZB and the IPO play Beethoven's 6th & 5th symphonies. they really were on form. Having heard them a few times when I thought their tempo was a bit slow, I think they really got it right today. A priviledge to hear them David

I know there have been many other threads about Joseph Haydn's string quartets, but I have just acquired the complete set, in the performances by the Aeolian Quartet (on the original Argo vinyl) and feel I must enthuse about them! The discs are as good...

Among all the Beethoven and Bach that has come to me in the last couple of months so has some well loved Brahms. Today a very kind person sent me the Four Symphonies in the American Columbia recording [Columbia Symphony Orchestra] from about 1960 is superb transfers to Sony CDs. This is a peculiarly circular tale as this is the third time I have had this set, and even twice on CDs! My LPs, I gave to the library of my junior school when I got the CDs in their first iteration, and then a...

I'd never listened to these before - and have found the experience very similar to discovering the Beethoven symphonies in my teens; that is in the first couple of listens it all sounds like lots of disjointed notes, by the third the more obvious...
