Music Room
The "concerts planned" topic seems to have fallen by the wayside somewhat, so I thought I'd try to resurrect it with the following. Massive Attack, at Leeds O2, on the 27th of this month. Hoping for a chilled evening. Dave.
I have an ND5 XS and a friend suggested trying DSD. Does anyone know which sample rate ND5 XS supports? What are your thoughts on the quality of the DSD sound?
I am really looking forward to the coming weekend, I will again attend the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam and I will have an ability to see the creme de la creme in jazz and soul.... I decided to create a dedicated post - so that only people who are interested can read it. I will publish pictures and concert impressions of all concerts I will attend.
I have the delightful 'Build Me Up from Bones' and her new album 'Undercurrent' is released on 17th June. If you don't know her music, there is a very nice taster of three (old) songs on The Toob. Type in her name and 'Tiny Desk'. The Tiny Desk Concerts are generally very good. John.
Found an old set of records, and they are very heavy, at first I thought they were made of steel. Very high noise floor, and weak sound. Are these the dreaded 78s, I have no experience with them. Bolero is super slow anyway, but it seemed even slower building than normal. :D
As somebody who rarely buys re-issues and re-masters I thought I'd create a thread of new music for the year. I also find threads with just photos of album covers not terribly enlightening. The premise for this thread is must be new music (even if an established artist), must be accompanied by a bit of description or even a link to a review/sample. Must be something that is standing out for you so far this year, a bit special. I will kick off with Tindersticks 'The Waiting Room' . Rich,...
Led Zep did not plagiarise the opening chords of Stairway to Heaven from the US band Spirit an LA court has ruled. It said the riff from Spirit's song Taurus "was not intrinsically similar".
For anyone unable to get tickets for this year's concerts, I have just heard from O2 that Jeff Lynn's ELO will be playing at Wembley Stadium on 24 June 2017. The O2 pre sale starts at 9am tomorrow morning and general sale tends to be 24 to 48 hours after this. Good luck getting tickets - hope you are successful this time.
Ralph Stanley who helped popularize Bluegrass passed away from cancer at 89. He was quite a showman and was part of the revival of the bluegrass genre. RIP.
Not sure if this is a Music Room or Padded Cell, but I went music: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/led-zeppelin-wins-stairway-heaven-172124063.html
Soundbreaking - Sky Arts 1. 9pm Today "This fascinating series traces the history of music recording and begins with a look at the great producers, from George Martin to Rick Rubin. (S1, ep 1)" Just seen the trailer. Sounds Interesting.
'Ron Carter Presents Dado Moroni' (1987/88) Import This is rarely available but I notice a few on Amazon. I can unequivocally recommend this as a superb, dynamic and musically rewarding recording...A gem in my collection. It's well worth taking a risk on for a few quid - Trust me I'm an audiophile! G
Does anybody have a experience with SMH-CD / Blue-Spec CD/ Impex 24 karat Gold CD formats ? I have one XRCD and plays really good on my CD2X, i compare a normal CD ve hi-def version of Kenny Brunel Midnight Blue, 24/192 plays better, but i can not say the same for 24/192 vs XRCD of Sonny Clark's Cool Strutin. XRCD is more alive and rhythmic, really good sound. Maybe it is mastering maybe my CD player at its best.. Are they just snake oil or thing of the past? İs the Japanese mastering makes...
All these RIP threads lately of famous baby boomers deaths. Folks reply with "sad", "tragic" and and "tragic" replies. Top four on my list, in no particular order: 1) Buddy Holly. Just 22 when he died with only three albums to his credit, yet had a profound musical influence on many of the most successful artists/bands of the 1960's. Certainly would have been a treat to hear him collaborate with his protégés like McCartney, Lennon or Dylan. 2) Kurt Cobain. Sealed his own fate yet very...
Just finished watching this on Beeb 4. A 4 week long "talent show", with no prizes, no recording contract for the winner.........so different right away. Just a chance for bands, none of whom will ever make a living playing music, to have their chance to appear on tv for a brief moment.....................folks who simply keep on playing for the pure joy of doing so. Well worth a look, on catchup, on BBC iPlayer.
New Band Of Horses album prices. All the same tracks. Quboz £18.88 24bit high res, £14.03 CD quality. 7Digital high res £21.99, £11.99 CD quality, £5.99 MP3 Amazon CD. £9.89 (includes free MP3 download too of course) As CDs become a 'forgotten' medium they are becoming better value, at least in comparison. Over double for high res is not going to tempt me unless it is something quite special, but even the standard CD quality price is drifting up it seems. Bruce
Sibelius (The Essential) OSMO VÄNSKÄ (BIS) the 15 CD set in 16/44 for €19.99. Wouldn't buy all the content individually but impossible for me to say no at that price.
For all those people with great turntables out there - I have just read HMV are having a vinyl week from 13 - 19th. I just discovered you can buy on-line too. For example Adele 21 is £17.99 And how does coloured vinyl sound? Just thought i would let my maimees' know
Steppenwolf is well-recognized for "Born To Be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride". I recently posted that Steppenwolf's lesser known "The Pusher" is perhaps the band's best track. I wonder what similar hidden gems others would offer here. A song that may not have met with any commercial success, but one you'd like others to have a chance to appreciate.
Has anyone here managed to rip this 5.1 DVD-A version to 24bit and any thoughts? Its quite hard to find online as a purchase HD file and the DVD-A is about £50+ if you find one. Not sure this is available as a download?
Hi all. Looking to replace a damaged CD so was wondering, does anyone know which CD remastered version of Pink Floyd's The Wall is the best in terms of sound quality, as there seems to be a few out there? New or secondhand btw. Or possibly a remastered HD download version if available?
It has just been announced that Dave has passed away. He had been ill for a long time. An obit was even printed 10 years or so ago. Probably best know for his fiddle playing with Fairport Convention.
After ripping my CD collection, and slowly getting to grips with streaming, it was time to replace a couple of the essential discs with high res remastered versions, starting with David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory - both 192/24 files. Upon first listen and a minute or so into track one, my initial reaction was a question of "is that it?" To expand, it did sound very good, although I felt slightly underwhelmed as perhaps I was expecting too much - hoping for more of a Bowie...
Any other fans of the band here? I was recently introduced to them via their (unfortunately now rare) 1997 album 'English Boy Wonders' and loved it. Investigations lead me to the 2013 release of the combined 'English Electric' albums, part one and two. This double CD with a marvellously informative 84 page booklet is fortunately inexpensive (direct from the band) and freely available. Described generically as neo-progressive prog rock; think early Genesis with a smattering of Yes, Jethro...
