Dear Friends,Those who have followed my posts in this part will by now know that I am fonder of Haydn's Symphonies than those of his friend Mozart. The opposite situation exists, of course in the matter of concertos! But where do do you find...
As a fan of HMHB, I think humour is an essential ingredient in songwriting. To me Nigel Blackwell is the finest lyricist since Anonymous (you know the guy who wrote all those great folk songs). I've always liked Jake Thackery, Bonzo Dog Band, They...

Miss Aguilera's new album is rather good. No, seriously.
I am currently enjoying a wonderful broadcast from the Edinburgh festival of this work (the BBC Scottish under the batton of David Robertson, of whom I'd not previously heard) and being utterly captivated by it - and wishing I had gone to this and not...
I wonder if I should buy this album. Some say is not jazz, but others seem to like it very much as a kind of experimental jazz!
Having just bought a Best of... album, the question arises, why is this my first Frank Zappa album?Anyone care to shortlist any future purchases?Howard
Rickie Lee Jones and me have had a relationship since the release of her self titled masterpiece (IMO). I think that i have taken more out of the relationship than Rickie buying all of her music (pretty well) and seeing her a few times. I would offer...
This is for Nicnaim, Haim and probably Nigel (Halibut) - I am an inveterate late night surfer on the hunt for odd bits of music. Earlier this week I took delivery of a somewhat dog-eared copy of True Blues. Can't really complain as it was under a...

A Matter of Life and Death is pretty much everything it's cracked up to be. Certain tracks remind me of Dance of Death a lot. So no surprises there. Good energy, and they're on form. I expect it will take a couple of listens to sort it out in my...
Dear Friends,This symphony was my second classical symphony, and discovered it for myself as a nine year old about the same time as the Great c Major. I would not want to be forced to choose between them!Today I picked up a new disc of a live Prom...
It will be a great evening at the Barbican I hope. One of my all time favourite artists playing one of their best albums. I hope John broadly stays true to the original album 'feel' and doesn't muzak the songs too much.Solid air, may you never, go...
There is a trailer on Channel 5 for a new series called "Criminal Minds" starting soon. There is some music accompanying the trailer which sounds a bit like "Fade to Gray" by Visage, but I am not sure that is the right track. Can anyone identify the...
My guitarist mate has just invited me to go see him. Anyone have any views, fave albums etc. Thanks Howard.
No details yet, but Syd Barrett has died
.....I like it! I didn't like "L&T" apart from a couple of songs, this one's a bit of "L&T" with a dollop of "TOOM" to my ears and all the better for it. It's a typically lazy Dylan album though, I mean he's ahd five years to come up with 10 songs and some of them (3 or so) are pretty much filler, and they do go on a bit too long. "Nettie Moore" is wonderful as is "Workingman's Blues No2". 7/10 meethinks. But I never really did get much beyond 1966/Hawks Dylan with the obvious one or two...
