Music Room
Careful readers may recall several posts I made a few months back about a rather excellent concert I attended at Edinburgh's Queen's Hall where Paul Lewis played Beethoven's op.79, op.28 (pastorale) and op.106 (hammerklavier) sonatas. The op.79 was...

When talking recently about a rather wonderful cd of Schubert's 8th and 9th symphonies I observed two things. First, that so well do these musicians play for Mackerras that they seem to punch well above their chamber orchestra weight and second, that...
The Morph the Cat thread got me thinking about stuff that's scandalously unavailable and needs to be re-released right now.For a kick off, Tim Buckley's Starsailor.
Lately I've been spending far too much on CDs (no change there then), anyway, even though I'm not the hugest fan of lieder but £20 for Fischer-Dieskau's almost complete Schubert survey (of about 20 discs) - that said, I've always been told by...

You wait for what seems live ages and then you’re knee deep in them.Thumping onto the doormat in quick succession this morning came Rush Replay X3, US remaster of Zep 4 CD in miniature LP facsimile sleeve (let's hope it sounds as good as it...
After reading Fredrik’s thread “A Record Library” it occurred to me that some of the recordings which Fredrik greatly admires – Furtwangler & Klemperer from the 50s and 60s were grossly underrepresented in my record collection. In fact, my only recordings of the Beethoven symphonies were the Karajan 70s set and the new Rattle, neither of which would be anywhere near Fredrik’s list of great performances. The Karajan set is the first one I owned, bought as a poor...
I've been thinking a fair amount about Brahms and his symphonies lately and thought I'd start a thread on the topic, then I did a search and discovered Fredrik had beaten me to it by some years with this interesting...

Ok ok so it is pop with a capital P. It also happens to be, by and large, a really fun, infectious and street smart album. Like the streets but with melody - so in other words, a lot more listenable.Great summer fluff which will sell in bucketloads....

HiAnyone interested in forming a listening group in the Gerrards Cross area. When I was a kid, I learnt about new music by listening with friends. It's less easy when you work and have kids. I like most types of music but particularly jazz, rock and ...

Likely for his subsequent Rebus crime novels rather than his pieces for Hi-Fi Review, former Franklin staffer Ian Rankin chooses his Desert Island Discs in tomorrows repeat on BBC Radio 4 at 9am BST.The programme is streamed at broadcast time but not...
My head is still reeling from watching them last night at the QEH. An astonishing performance, easily the best gig I have been to in a long time. This is how a good live concert should be: great acoustics, the feel of an intimate venue and performers...
Hi folks, Considering that LPs were quite expensive back in the 1960s and 1970s it seems surprising that we can pick up good clean examples of popular rock, jazz and classical discs for under a £1 in charity shops and on ebay (plus P&P). This is of course to do with supply and demand. The most popular LPs sold in very large quantities to the masses, and these same masses quickly went over to compact disc when it arrived. There are therefore large quantities of often rarely played LPs...

My apologies if this is a dumb question, but I just bought the Oscar Peterson Trio 20-bit remastered "Night Train" CD and I'm wondering if my copy is defective. At about 1:52 into track 8 ("Things Ain't What They Used to Be") there is a loud popping...
