Following on from the previous Ukelele thread. I had the pleasure of seeing this lot live in Oxford a few nights ago. An incredible evening of musical entertainment ranging from crying with laughter at the comedy through to admiration for the sheer...

I like all kinds of music. Rock, Jazz and Folk-Rock. I would like to recommend the label Repertoire. This label is having great re-issues of Progressive Rock, many of them in beautiful digi-sleeves. The sound is carefully restored. This label is a...

No, this isn’t another complete piano sonata cycle. At least not yet. I recently picked up the first volume of a projected complete cycle by this Japanese pianist. It contains the Op 2 sonatas and was recorded in 2003, and it is only disc...

Over the past several months I’ve read some positive reviews and comments about Craig Sheppard’s Beethoven cycle, so I figured I should probably try it out at some point. When the opportunity arose to acquire the set in a most affordable...

I’ve had good luck with French pianists in Beethoven. I just like the way they sound. I can’t say that I would make any French pianist I’ve heard a first choice for the complete set, though in specific sonatas they do shine, like Op...

As I mentioned once here before, quite by chance as a young student I bought Mozart's piano concerto nos 20 & 21 played by Claudio Abbado (on DG vinyl). It was bought on a whim and has turned out to be one of my best loved pieces. I feel I know this piece well enough now to want to explore some other interpretations. So the simple question is which ones ? I fear though that because this recording is now ingrained in my brain, all others will sound 'wrong' - but it will be a fun experience...

Went and bought a new vinyl copy of Sade's Diamond Life today to replace the old one, which is getting a bit noisy after 20 or so years.Very surprised to find that it's a different recording. Different vocal track, different mix. Worse, it sounds like...

I went to see Jackson Browne at the City Hall in Sheffield on Wednesday and, overall, would recommend that you get to see him if you can. He played with David Lindley who as well as being completely mad is an amazing musician who seems to be able to...

Maybe not everyones cup of tea but I find the production of this album simply wonderful. So much consideration has been employed such that the detail, mood, integration of all the elements of each track to be far superior to anything else in my...

Looking through my collection of symphonies, a good deal of it is Karajan/BPO.Well, when I bought it in the 80s if you wanted the best you bought the yellow label and that was usually K/BPO, didn't you? Looking back over past threads and I rarely see...

I picked up a copy of the said CD on my recent visit to Naim, and it's a real grower. The splendidly named Zeus B. Held, Jim Lampi (Chapman Stick) and others have created an hypnotic rhythmic aboriginal 'World Music' sound, which is delightfully...

From the Glyndebourne website: 'A Glyndebourne & Finnish National Opera Co-Production School 4 Lovers is a fresh adaptation of Mozart’s opera Così fan tutte. 18th century opera is fired up with the energy of 21st century hip-hop to create a new cultural fusion. Orchestras deliver raw beats. MCs vie with sopranos. Opera battles with hip hop for centre stage. The setting has changed too – it’s no longer Naples, but it’s an inner city estate. But the guys in the...

I've been mulling this thread over for a few weeks now, and since I've just picked up and listened to a new recording, now would seem to be the perfect time.I came to Don Carlos fairly late, my prejudices against Italian opera having been coloured by...

Just discovered this LP. Eddie Costa's piano trio plays some standards (Funny Valentine, Diane, etc) but in an innovative, percussive manner. Stunning performances from 1959. Yet what struck me especially was the remarkable quality of the recording -...

Some months ago I asked for some input on Ketil Bjornstad to decide whether to check him out live. I got some good tips and a request from Expat in Oz to tell how it was if I chose to go. So here it is now.I went along to the Queen's Hall last night...
