As a teenager [in the 1970s] my friends and I 'were into' Progrssive Rock. As I got older my taste widened and 80% of my collection is now classical. I thought this might have been part of the natural aging process but reading our forum I have had another thought. Rock and Roll died in the 1970s. Led Zep, nothing after Physical Graffitti. Jethro Tull, nothing after Minstrel. Deep Purple, nothing after 1974. Stones, saw them at Knebwoth, finished by 1976. Dylan, all dredful after Desire. Etc.
Has anyone heard this new 6 CD set?

Interesting read for a Friday afternoon
Jose Gonzalez on 'Veneer'.This is simple, haunting and beautiful music, reminding myself and other devotees of the dear departed ND.I've ordered a Japanese copy of the CD.John.PS. A new ND biography by Trevor Dann is released on 2nd February.
You come home and find that your wife has bought you a CD555/552/500x3 active/DBLs and run off with the milkman - in your supreme happines what is the first piece of music you would play to celebrate your new gains?
When I read last year that Kun-Woo Paik would record all of the Beethoven piano sonatas, I was interested though not exactly spurred to rush out and buy it the day it was released. My exposure to this pianist is limited to his very good Prokofiev...
I see that DGG are about to re-release their Bernstein Mahler recordings in three budget boxes as a continuation of their Bernstein Edition (although the set doesn't appear to include his Berlin PO Ninth Symphony). The symphonies are also being...
Mentioned this in the 'what are you listening to...' post. Played properly now. Jolly good stuff.

How far apart are your 'soft' and 'hard' wares? My music system is in the family/living room. I keep my music in the basement. I have there 600 LPs and 740 CDs on shelves along separate walls. I usually bring upstairs 5-10 albums that stay on the...
Do you have any recommendations for a fantastic recording of the "moonlight sonata"? I have read here on the forum that Annie Fischers recording from the 50s on EMI should be very good, but I haven't managed to locate it anywhere on the internet. I...
now by over rated I don't mean crap, albums by necessity have to be rated to be over rated so these are good(ish) albums that somehow have become linked to the holy grail of audio somewhat erroneously (to my ears)2 come to mind straight away.1. Beach...

Following on from a post by Huwge from "what are you listening to right now" choosing I have tip toed into jazz in the last few years and the albums I keep going back to are "back to back" and "side by side" Duke Ellington/Johnny Hodges.From...
Spookily, I heard on the midnight radio news last night that this soul great had died . Only 64 - apparently he suffered a heart attack. I loved his 60's recording output, including of course, "The Midnight Hour".
Did you ever buy an album give it one listen, not like some aspect of it and put it carefully away?Only to take it out some serious time later, asking yourself "I wonder how this sounds with the new speaker position" or some such question.Happens to...
I've always admired Bruce rather than being a fan. However, at Xmas I received the Born To Run box set, which blew me away. It was one of those occasions when you just play it again and again for days. Following a friends recommendation I then bought...
It appears that this has been delayed yet again. Amazon.com is showing Jan 1 2010!! Web rumours suggest 'some time in 2006' - have seen April 2006 also.I ordered it from Amazon on the basis that it would be released on Jan 16/17 - perhaps I should ask...
Now I have found out that I will try to delve into Bruckners work, and as I have understood it will be easiest for me to start with the symphony no. 7, as it should be the most accessible (together with no. 4).So do you have any nice recommendations...
Two nights ago I went to the LA Phil with great anticipation. They were recording the concert for a new contract with DG and it is going to be the first in the new Disney Hall. Salonen is under contract with them and LA Phil was back in the 80's under...
