Music Room

I had a reply from another recent thread suggesting classical music would be good listening and a meaningful step into a different listening pleasure. I have to admit I know nothing of this genre but like most, have been exposed to it inadvertently from film scores to beans adverts. I find the whole canon of work quite daunting. I know for most this will be a matter of personal taste, so wide is the choice. However, what I would like to hear is some simple suggestions for an “easy in” from...

It's a while since I've been moved to tears, but the 24 bit Ghost of Tom Joad has just done the trick. Highly recommended.

I recently had a very bizarre conversation with my cousin regarding her choice of concert ticket.  Let me explain, my cousin will be 50 this year (to my 52).  She is one of the world's biggest Take That fans and buys music by the track.  When I asked her why she didn't buy the complete album (including Greatest Hits compilations) her response was "Because I don't like all of the tracks".  I really had no response to that one. We had exchanged pleasantries and Happy New...

Holy crap this has been a rough year for our rock and roll heroes; the very first album I ever purchased as a 12 year old was his first use of the "Starship" billing: Three huge losses and January isn't even over...

This extremely famous concerto has usually perplexed me. So many performances seem simply slow and full of mannerism ... But I found a good performance at last - though from a 1934 recording! Huberman, Szell and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on HMV. The recording does not sound its age! https://www.youtube.com/watch?...index=62&list=WL I have ordered the last copy of the EMI References CD available onamazon [UK], but it is certainly not slow or Brahmsian! I hope some get...

Thought I'd start a thread where listeners can share what shows off MUSICALITY . will start with a simple electronica composition. Glitterbug.   Swirl.    Privilege. Starts with offset rhythms and minor key descending harmonies that half way changes to major key ascending harmonies and rhythms, always makes me want to press replay to hear the transition again. Leonard Cohen.  Born in Chains.   Popular Problems. Standard Leonard but the last ending to fade is...

Which recordings would you recommend to test bass: 1. Agilty & Speed where the bass is appropriately present and driving, but not overwhelming the music 2. Sheer heft (sub-bass?)... Other categories might come to mind of course but I thought stick to 1&2 for clarity. G

Does anyone else know of the folk singer John Tams? I've just discovered that he appears in the ITV drama 'Jericho' as the character 'Songbird'. It's on this (Thursday) evening. John.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoGKkkuo9Hk Having just acquired the original LPs of the Solti Ring Cycle, I was delighted to find this BBC documentary about the production.  Apart from the anecdotes, I'm struck by the English accents of the crew and the packets of cigarettes on the console. The recordings are amazing. I now also have the limited edition set for Solti's centenary and this documentary is included on a DVD.  Also a facsimile of Solti's Gotterdammerung score. ...

With the resurgent discussion of PRaT on the forum, I thought it would be fun to share those recordings that we feel really shows this capability on our Naim equipment and gets that foot tapping...  As many have streaming services and / or...

This looks interesting .... Review from yesterday's Times. "The most hotly anticipated drama of the year? Certainly for those with the Stones, Led Zeppelin and the New York Dolls in their record collection. Here’s a rollicking, ten-part ride through the excesses of the 1970s music scene in New York, and you couldn’t ask for much more from the pedigree — Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger are the executive producers (Scorsese also directs the two-hour pilot). It’s so cool that it even inserts...

Toscanini! https://www.youtube.com/watch?...list=WL&index=63 Barbirolli is so “slow” in his famous 1967 recording [but not in his almost unknown 1927 recording that Elgar praised], ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?...list=WL&index=63 Hope someone gets pleasure from my discovery! Love from George

Lovin' it. Typical excellent SW jazz-infused atmospheric prog-rock. Ninet Tayeb's vocal on the reworked 'Don't Hate Me' is simply gorgeous. Roll on '5'. John.

Today came the sad news that the famous composer and conductor Pierre Boulez passed away at the age of 90. Boulez's career as a conductor took off in the 1950s, during which time he began acting as guest conductor for some of Europe's leading orchestras and festivals. Boulez's talent led him to be more and more in demand and he was appearing widely as a conductor by the 1960s. He led the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1971-75 and from 1971-77 was also music director of the New York...

I'm going rogue. CG for me. A great choice of covers which, dare I say, better the originals. VU & Nico is so passé. I'm not wrong! ..... am I?

Good Lord they were better than The Beatles from 1967. Their first album is impeachable. It just keeps on giving. Odessa is just a marvel.

Hi to all, I'm looking to replace some of my old Led Zeppelin CD's with downloads and I was wondering how they sound ? I'd like to buy Led Zep 1 , 2 and 3 replacing old rather dull sounding CD's.  Any advice gratefully received..
