I've been listening again to this record and it really is quite brilliant. The vocals and piano only versions are a great improvement on the somewhat AOR band versions. The final four songs - Political Science, The World Isn't Fair, In Germany Before...
New album - just superb. Beautiful set of Auchtermuchty influenced heart felt country rock songs with an injection of east coast Scottish humour (not a plentiful commodity).
I fancy giving some zappa a try, any suggestions on a good place to start?cheersHawk
To my mind the biggest hole in my Beethoven sonata collection has been the absence of Wilhelm Backhaus. I’ve had a solitary disc of his stereo cycle for a while, and the recordings on that disc all compare very favorably to anyone. Indeed, until...
I am an idiot.Went to town for a beer at lunchtime, a bit hazy went into WHSmith and thought "Lordy! Supertramp have released an elpee", of course it's called Road to Rouen and I thought "a kind of follow on to Paris, then", in a hurry and not really...
Dear Friends,As promised six months or more ago! My thoughts on Walcha's recording, published in 1961. The forty eight preludes and fugues in all the keys, twice, is such a huge and daunting work that to truly get to know them is a big task in itself....
In revisiting the albums of my youth, I've recently acquired CDs of Tarkus and Pictures At An Exhibition. The Pictures CD has a bonus track of studio recordings of some of the pieces, which are remarkable and put the live recordings on the album to...
Just got Hayley's latest offering. Different from Pure but more extension of her vocals. Like the one with just her voice and guitar accompaniment, cannot remember which track though, still getting to know the album.
Mine was on the mat when i came in just now- anyone else got it or have opinions?Review comming later.....................martin
Who next? I’m hoping HMV Japan comes through on the Backhaus mono set, but I needed something else to sate by demand for the 32. Options abound, and Barenboim and Kuerti beckon, but when browsing Overstock again I came across all three volumes...
I'm amazed at how many established musicians try to cover Bob Dylan songs. With markedly few exceptions, few have little or anything to add: amongst the exceptions, I'll include the Byrds and (of course) Hendrix. Case in point: the new Mojo has a...
Just had a look over on the ECM site and there's a special offer on the Rarum series. Just got the second series box set for €120 compared with £126 on Amazon!First series box set is €90 and doudle albums are €15.99 and single...
In case classical fans have not had a look at MDT.co.ukjust to say they do some terrific deals in terms of special offers, and free postage if you spend over £50.Phil.
Anything on this label is purely wonderful. Check out the Luv n' Haight section for the older stuff. Even their T-shirts are cool...http://www.ubiquityrecords.com
Well as we approach the end of Q1 2005, I am already certain of a few CD's that will be on my end of year best of list. Would love to hear from you on your best of the year to date releases......1.) Pat Metheny Group - The Way Up - huge piece of work,...
I saw her do an acoustic reprise of her oevre commemorating its 10 year anniversary. Both the concert and the studio (acoustic) release were sensational. The CD-currently being sold until July 26th only in Starbucks (after which it goes on general...
In an effort to liven up discussion slightly here, and reflecting on the fact that some threads here get very few responses, I had an idea (probably not a very good one, but hey ). It sometimes seem as though there are one or two discs in my...
I’m super interested in this album, either the “4 X 45rpm” or “1 X 33rpm” and I was wondering if anyone here has had a copy of it on vinyl? I love the album very much but I’m a little worried about the sound...
Having reached the same point in both cycles, I decided to do a head-to-head comparison in the late sonatas to determine who I like best and precisely why. I haven’t done head-to-head comparisons of Beethoven’s sonatas for a while, and the...
HI,Just been introduced to this Cd and have to say I really like the music and songs.Question is: I know johnson has other CD's out - are they similar to this one?andy c!
I think if I hear that wretched James bloody Blunt thing again I will do a Vincent van G and slice my ears off. Why is this self-pitying, insipid whinger so popular? He's the Phil Collins of our time and I really, really hate his record with a...
I just bought an Iomega CD/RW drive to allow me to make some custom discs made up of my favorite selections. I know that, in theory, a digital transfer should be perfect copies of the original, but is this really the case? Is the copied disc somewhat...
Been listening to this non-stop for two weeks. RF with Fred Hersch and Bill Frissell, singing standards. Absolutely spellbinding. She signs an octave lower than her normal opera voice, and it's truly a wonderful record.
Nice work, his last album. He was the Pavement singer. This band was good, but it is finished!
I've been entertaining myself recently smurfing some radio stations. Just like to recommend Radio Taino from Havana to anyone who likes the Cuban sound. Radio Taino
