Today I had the distinct pleasure of listening to Charles Mackerras’ 1997 recording of Janacek’s Kat’a Kabanova, with the great Gabriela Benackova in the title role. Yes, she’s too old too play the part, and yes her voice has...

Following live8, I was moved to rectify what for a while had felt like something of a gaping hole in my cd collection and pick up a couple of discs by The Who. I duly picked up Who's Next and Live at Leeds. Now, while I very much enjoyed Who's Next, in...

In the last couple of weeks, "One is the loneliest number" featured on the TV programme 'House' (Ch5).I recognise the song, and felt sure I'd listened to it on a recent freebie compilation CD, but then couldn't find it.So, two questions...1. Who's the...

AM has died Monday, the 25th July, 2005. I'll miss this great trombone player, who has brought whole new aspects and techniques to trombone playing, and at the same time been the most unassuming person in every context he appeared in. Have seen him in...

Have just been going through a new batch of Led Zep bootlegs. Of particular note are "Sgt Page's Badgeholder's Band" (LA Forum 1977) which features Keith Moon joining Bonzo on "Moby Dick" and "Rock & Roll" - they make quite a racket, as you can imagine. Also interesting is "Deep Throat III", a recording of the third night of their LA Forum residency in 1975. The show is introduced by Linda Lovelace (hence the title) and it contains a version of "Dazed & Confused" which is - wait for it - 46...

When I found this set for an unbelievably low price (about $18 for 10 discs) at HMV Japan, I figured I should give it a try. First, this would serve as a test of HMV’s service, something I thought worthwhile since HMV Japan has a number of tasty...

How to follow up the bomb that is Anne Øland’s cycle? Up until now I’ve avoided Vladimir Ashkenazy for a couple reasons. First, I was warned away from his Beethoven from a couple acquaintances. While not horrible they assured me,...

Anyone listened to Eno's new album, 'Another Day on Earth'?Its a lot more commercial than his ambient stuff, but very good for all that.

I have been given a copy of Fitness to Practice by the Amateur Transplants. A sort of '00s version of Baron Knights with a medical twist. NOT suitable for playing in front of young children and grandparents. The a track about a wonder drug...

I've always loved the music on the Boz Skaggs album "Silk Degrees". However, the CD version has always sounded way too laid back to me. It seems muddled as if the musicians are performing behind a thick curtain. It has sounded that way with all my...

I just hooked up the multichannel outputs on my DVD5. I just played Eagles "Hotel California" and Fleetwood Mac "Rumours". The sound quality was outstanding! DVD-A (at least on these disks) blows away the sound from CD's (and the sound of CD's on the...

I'm interested to know what's NEW out there in the world of Jazz. I've been trying to buy works by newer (and younger) jazz artists and have come up with some interesting stuff. Here are three that I'll rave about:Brad Mehldau, Pianist/Composer --...

Has anyone else noticed the similarity of this film's music to Ralph Vaughan Williams work? A different theme tune perhaps. But the similarities seemed striking to me. I kept expecting the orchestra to settle down to a gutsy rendering of the "Tallis...

Dear friends, this is one of the moments that rarely happen to me throughout a year: I've listened to Julia Fischer's interpretation of JS Bach's (very much loved) Partita #2, and was simply knocked down. Completely. For a very long time, it hadn't...
