Music Room
Here's something new(ish) and very, very good. This if for fans of acoustic guitar, and she brings something edgy to it as well. She thanks Preston Reed on her latest, and as far as I can tell she's about 26 year old. It should be fun to listen to her...
OKBit of a novice here....Just bought "From the soul" - Joe Lovano and was reasonably impressed by the music and the quality of the recording.Anyone have further suggestions for music on this label which hopefully is also a good recordingRegardsMark
I had a bit of a splurge on Part a few years ago and bought several ECM recordings (Tabula Rasa, Te Deum, Litany, Alina). After a bit of a gap I have been listening again, and enjoying them hugely. I have a few Tavener works, which do little for me...
Can anyone tell me if there is a current orchestral version however old the performance available to buy of this work. Failing that does anyone have one they could copy for me? I would of course reimburse any expenses. John Ireland originally wrote...
Has anyone heard this? It got a rave review and five stars in April's Record Collector.Andy
Having recently discovered that I am enjoying piano music a bit more these days, I thought that I would start with the greatest piano virtuoso of all, Liberace.Any recommendations of his greatest works?What!?....
My father was a musician (played violin on Rod Stewarts early stuff), so when we got a copy of one of his albums (Every Picture tells a story I think) I sat and listened - on the track 'I know I'm loosing you, there is a bit with Rod and Madeline Bell...
I have several URLs I use for searches. There seems to be regular request from members for "where can I get XYZ's first album etc" is there a case for putting these and anyone elses URLs in a sticky for future reference?Howard

'Live in Aught Three'.I kid you not. Superbly recorded and played, live rock music, with some witty repartee from this good ol' Southern boy. There's a great crack about the damn Yankee in charge of the Union, who can't say 'nuclear' (as we...

Since the original Rare & Unusual Operas thread has been archived, I thought I’d start a new one. Der ferne Klang Always on the lookout for something new or unusual in the operatic field, I found Franz Schreker’s opera Der ferne Klang at BRO for the unbearably high price of $4. Since he was active in Austria in that fruitful period from the turn of the century up to the rise of the Nazis, I figured it would be worth a shot. After all, my recent exploration of two Zemlinksy...
Now I don't know how this will go down as an excercise, but here goes.We all love our music and buy according to our tastes and what we hear. So why don't we for the next month go out and buy one album from an artist we've never actually listened to,...
What musical piece do you own with numerous perfomances, and which version is your favorite? I have J.S.Bach's Goldberg Variations played by: * Glenn Gould (the 1955 & 1981 recordings) * Andras Schiff (ECM) * Ito Ema (MA Recordings) * Dmitry Sitkovetsky's string arrangement (Nonesuch) I find myself listening mostly to the strings arrangement and to Ito Ema's recordings which are warm and articulate. Great bundle of interactive computer stuff with the CD. Tons of stuff to play with for hours. Shame the music isn't up to much. To me, it sounds like a Beautiful South album. After 18 & Play, this is disappointing.
Every now and then it happens - you buy a true gem of a CD, one that you know you will play for years to come. When I reported my best of 2004 CD's I did not recommend Bebo & Cigala that was released in 04 in the UK as I had not become acquainted with it by then. A few weeks ago I bought this CD and I cannot recommend it enough. A collaboration between an eighty three year old cuban pianist and a half century younger flamenco vocalist it is a charming tour through the a selection of cuban,...
Do you know how many albuns has this singer?I´ve got three albuns

Interesting story in April's Record Collector (p.24) claiming that according to The Institute of Chemical Engineering the key by-product of petroleum refining used to make vinyl will be phased out by 2009. It goes on to say that a number of...

When I learned of the new Orfeo release of a 1957 Salzburg Festival recital by Rudolf Firkusny, I was intrigued. When I saw the repertoire – Chopin’s Third Sonata, Janacek’s Sonata, and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition...
It was time to find out if he keeps his streak alive. In just over a year, Leif Ove Andsnes has impressed me greatly in Grieg and Bartok, so it was time to hear if he can hold his own in Mozart. His disc of Haydn concertos is splendid, so I had high...
