Despite the dreadful accident of last year John's turned in a superb new album. A kind of Best Of[not] that showcases many of the styles he's innovated over a long illustrious career. Lovely to hear his Mutron guitar, folkysmokyJazz and widedeep synth pads again. And that voice - peerless and beyond description. Production is sympathetic and the sound is tight with characteristic deep powerful bass. You do have to sit thro yet another "Goodnight Irene" though despite help from Mavis Staples,...
Clement Seymore Dodd, founder of the Studio One record label and producer and prime mover behind many of the finest moments in reggae, died in his studio on the 4th May. Cause of death is said to be a heart-attack. Coxone ran sound-systems in the...
That is to say, are there any? I finally picked up "This is the Sea" on cd this weekend, and sonically it ranges from grating to ear-shredding. A prime candidate for remastering if ever I heard one. Has it happened? If so, is it any better?(I know,...
For many years I have had a crush on Alexander Scriabin's Preludes for Piano, especially the Opus 11 set that was published between 1888 and 1896. In later life Scriabin (1872 - 1915) got more and more progressive, wishing to compose music for piano,...
As James Brown once said when Bobby Byrd asked him what he was goin' to play next: "Bobby, ah don't know. But whats eva I play, it's got ta be funky!"Yeah!Have been going through hundreds of LPs and 12"ers and have come up with these suggestions:Bus...
Well after weeks of importing CDs onto the mac I am able to come up with statistics! So far I have 102 albums which are in fact compilations.Compilations seem to be the twisted ignored love chiled of 'proper albums' and are frequently dismissed by the...
Read about Arthur Russell in an issue of Wire at the end of last year. I have to confess I'd never heard of him but the article stuck in my mind. Saw a copy of the Soul Jazz compilation while browsing last week and picked it up on spec. It's a wild...
We've talked about this before. It would be fun to post about concerts we've been to in one single thread. My opening concert is the final concert of the Rotterdam Gergiev Festival, which this year was all about Prokofiev: symphonies, concertos, the...
Saw him last friday. Great R&B show! catch if you can.
The 'Follow That Dream' label have just re-released 'Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis', a show from 1974 with more of the performance included this time around. The sound quality is outstanding. Generally I prefer Presleys late 1950's material...

Was listening to an old Black Sorrows CD the other day, and thought the singer sounded remarkably like Tom Petty at times.Just thought I'd share that!

Hi allSome (rather long) time ago, the young Leonard BERNSTEIN made some educational programmes on TV, where he gave some insight into classical music and opera; I think the programmes were mainly aimed at children.Who knows details of these –...

Over the weekend while staying with a friend, we dug out and listened to his new 35th Anniversary Yes compilation. When playing And You And I, the last two parts were an unfamiliar version that sounded dreadful, with different parts and extended solo...
I spent a very pleasant evening Chez Davey last night. I had been invited over to play some music. Malcolm said, "Bring some things I haven't heard before, I don't mind what but do bring some Chameleons and Porcupine Tree". I duly obliged. I didn't...

I was reading reviews of Kula Shaker on Amazon, and "Moseley Shoals - Ocean Colour Scene" was one of the "Listeners who bought Kula Shaker also bought..." suggestions. The reviews are all over the place, from "album of the 90s" to "so bad it's good" to...
I have achieved my holy grail courtesy of Ebay... Yesterday I secured Glastonbury Fayre - including tracks from The Edgar Broughtonn Band, Pink Fairies, Gong, The Grateful Dead, Hawkwind, Marc Bolan, Skin Ally & David Bowie. And today I secured Dashiell Hedayat - Obsolete on Shadow Records. Rarer than the proverbial hens teeth. A happy chappy I am Any one else have any mega rare records??? Just intrigued. Cheers Mike (waiting for the postman to deliver)
Chaps,The thread title says it all, but if you are at all interested in glitchy icelandic electronica (and let's face it, who isn't?), then the new Mum CD is a cracker. Two tracks of total bliss.I'm off to see them at the Old Vic in a couple of weeks,...
