John Zorn's music is diverse, eclectic, challenging and varied. I would break Zorn's projects into four categories, the first, which is of primary interest to me includes his work with the Masada Chamber Ensemble. The second category includes his...

I recently bought both Murray Perahia's latest Bach disc and Andras Schiff's latest Schumann disc and must share my thoughts.First, Perahia's disc of the keyboard concertos 3, 5, 6, and 7 is quite remarkable. If you liked the first disc - and I don't...

I just saw him live here at a small venue in Toronto. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. Boring, prog rock twaddle! Crappy sound! Generally uninspiring.Yes, they are good musicians. It's just too bad they've chosen to waste their talent on crappy music. If you...

Continuing into another corner of classical music, what are your favorite pieces of chamber music, not including the already surveyed string quartets? The options are so vast. Any combination of two or more instruments will suffice. Oh the...

I went to a Jazz gig and a prog rock concert broke out!I would say this has been one of the most extraordinary concerts I've attended.Starting off with a sort of Hawaiin surf music number, the band progressed through, Cuban bop, an extended funky prog...

I've read that Pablo Casals recordings of these works, made in the 1930s, are essential. I do in fact own a version of them on cassette tape by Paul Tortellier. I now want to buy a CD. Does any one know what these mono recordings would sound like on...

Prompted by Tony L to post more on folk music, here is a list of some of my favourites. Where no album recommendations are given, you may assume all output is excellent. Where a recommendation is given, be advised to follow it. All this is IHMO, of...

Any Stax/Volt fans out there who can help me?Here is my question--how do the Stax/volt reissues (I'm thinking here of the stax/volt singles reissue box sets) sound when played using a modest Naim cd player and naim system as compared to the Sundazed...

I'm a BIG Faithless fan, and missed Jamie Catto's influence on Outrospective. I've since discovered, after having been buried in work, his lasted venture - 1 Giant Leap. See here. Or rather I know of it, but don't actually know it (yet?).As I haven't...

I've just bought a brilliant CD. Leon & Eric Bibb....A family affair. It's a father & son double act. I think Leon is 80 years of age and has the most wonderful voice. 12 superb tracks which just flow from to the next. It's a MUST buy for any Blues fans. Dave

They're coming to town with an 11 piece band, apparently. Are they worth seeing? Do they jam and improvise? If they just re-hash their songs from the album, I'll give it a miss.thanksmike

hi pop pickers (yeah, I'm that old)I'm listening to one of my favourite recordings at this very moment, it's called: "Blues is my wailin' wall" by Mighty Mo Rodgers. It's hard to categorize this disc, it's less blues than soul or R'n'B. It passes into...

Hello people ,quick question, I've started burning a few cd's of late as was wondering what is the most reliable/best quality blank CD-R's to use? I've used both TDK reflex 74min and BASF(EMSF?) 74min and both seem ok. I know that most audiophiles...

Inspired by Nick Lees and his quest to get jazz, I decided to get a Lambchop recording. I bought Nixon. I've listened to it a couple of times, but despite a certain wistful charm, it goes right by me. It just seems so insipid, do you have to persevere...

I've tried listening to jazz a few times but I just don't get it. There doesn't seem to be a beat or a melody, just a lot of guys playing around with their instruments ... and they don't seem to be playing the same song. Can someone explain what it is...

If you click on "racks", a quaint giutar tibdit is played. What song is this from? It's killing me, as it's catchy as hell and I know I've heard it somewhere (God help me if it's some over-40's smooth jazz).German Naim storePS there's some pretty...

I must confess that I rather like Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. I stress that I like Mussorgsky’s version rather than Ravel’s rather more famous orchestration of the work. Try as I might to enjoy the Gallic...
