I have just seen an album by David Bowie selling in excess of £1500.00. I followed a discussion here a day ago about a LZ album which would probably demand that sort of sum if not more. Other albums sell for far more than that! Question is: how much is too much and are people prepared to pay for a "pressing mishap", misspelling or other minor printing errors that overinflate their market value while the "recorded material" is still the same? Who on earth dictates those numbers? All because...

I have been having Jazz piano lessons for just over a year with an excellent teacher who is a pro jazz pianist/arranger on the London scene. He gives new pupils a 'listening list' to act as homework between lessons which I've found really useful. I've discovered some real gems using it and, given how many times the Music Room seems to have postings from people asking for Jazz recommendations, I thought it may prove useful. The list was titled ' Essential Jazz Recordings: a wide range of...

Record companies are now re-releasing albums with every concert, rehearsal and outtake  included. A new example is a 24 CD set of King Crimson's very fine album Red. it is an album I enjoy, but not sure I want 24 CDs worth. Do other forum members...

I was very lucky to be asked to add some backing brass at the Abbey Road recording studios a while for some "Belgian Pop Music" by a guy called Flip Kowlier. On the way out though I took this image of some of Abbey Roads Reel to Reel equipment in...

Just discovered this little gem. Ambient, but majestic and involving with it, and one of the best piano sounds I have heard in a long time. It's on Erased Tapes. You get the code for a compilation download too.

I just listened to this album for the first time in a few years and during track 13,  "La Luna Negra" there is noticeable distortion on the piano. Has anyone else heard the same on this album or is it a sign that my hi-if is becoming poorly...

Sometimes the music is bad, sometimes the performer just does not connect - Who have you gone to see full of anticipation only to come away disappointed? For me it was Van Morrison. No Music, No Contact, No Fun. G

I’ve just had installed a new piece of kit for home demo, about which I will post separately in due course, and have been running through familiar albums including Genesis. This has prompted me to consider the question: what’s my favourite Genesis album and what do others think? To kick things off I’m going to give my vote to A Trick of the Tail . For me this album has such a splendid variety of great tracks. Beginning with the haunting and instantly recognisable first few notes of Dance on...

I've become a big fan of Bandcamp this year and a reasonable proportion of albums are available at 'name your price' i.e. you can have them free if you wish. Other stuff can be anything up to 'full' price. I think a download should be cheaper than a physical CD copy-even when they offer quite good res FLAC files. I generally pay £5 for a full album when it is 'name your price' because that somehow seems fair. I think the Bandcamp model does give decent percentage to the artists but I guess...
