Hi-Fi Corner
I have a dilemma.. Putting together a small system to use for two purposes - a small studio for messing about with electronic music etc, and will also be used as a second system for general listening in that area. (I know, needs are fundamentally different for those applications, so this is a compromise all the way!) Main system is PMC/Naim in another location and won't be touched. What I already have: A pair of PMC Db1i monitors. AudioLab M-Dac Plus Matched pair of HA-200 class A monoblock...
No i've not suddenly seen the light, but i thought a few of you (as there are a number of SL2 fans on here) might be interested in this Hi-Fi Critic article on passive vs active SL2 loudspeakers . It's quite a few years old now but makes interesting reading especially regarding the design and engineering of the speakers. A good read. James.
I had a look at some of the Naim prices starting April 30th. I wonder if the Nac 282 really sounds $1K better now (at 9K). If Naim can't get their costs under control (or the distributor can't), it's really Naim's problem.. Or maybe they don't expect/want to sell any of the classic pieces anymore... - or want the uniti stuff to appear cometitive. The 282 was already overpriced 5 years ago - now it's just pricing itself out of the market. The stageline is $900. That's just a joke - it was...
Hi is anyone using superuniti with proac d18 is it a great partnership thanks aceone69.
I have not been on the forum in a while, unfortunately, but I had to have my Nait XS (made in 2009) serviced because of a weird issue. Sound was only coming out of the left speaker (Harbeth C7-3s purchased within the past two years). I switched speakers around but the sound was only coming out of the switched speaker on the left. So, I then moved the speakers back and switched the speaker cables (left to right and right to left). Before, only left speaker had sound, but now only the right...
Does anyone use monitor audio silver 500 with naim system do they sound good.
I have since day one used the ‘system automation’ along with 3.5mm plug/ wire connections to operate the CD5xs from naim app, and this is fine, but what I really miss is the 272 remote control also operating the CD player, for full convenience. so I was looking again at the System Automation on the 272 and can see other stuff under ‘Advanced’ which appears to show the ‘play’ ‘pause ‘ etc allocated to the numerical pad. I have had a mess around but it doesn’t seem to do anything. anyone no...
Running bare NDac into 252 Sc 250.2 into PMC Fact 3s. My room is fairly small and listen at lowish well below 9 oclock- usually at 8 oclock Going to buy a used 555 or XPS2. Is the bass on the 555 fuller?? At low levels would i get the benefit? Have seen previous posts to indicate the 555 can be bass heavy which I would not want. Would appreciate views regards
Reading somewhere that there won't be any more parts available to service a certain Naim cd-player, I was wondering if you still can get a CDS3 serviced. And can you connect a XPS DR power supply to a CDS3?
First post ever on anything - so forgive me! I’m currently on an upgrade path having caught the vinyl bug after purchasing a Michell Gyrodec SE with a Rega RB300 tonearm (soon to be replaced with a SME 309) and Benz Micro Ace SL cartridge. This is with a Lehmann Decade Phono Stage into a Nait XS2 . I also use a CD5si . I currently have Monitor Audio Silvers which I’m looking to upgrade. I was wondering what speakers people would recommend for this system, if anyone has any additional advice...
Hi I notice with Naims new components .....commendably ... a second switch mode supply is added to allow for standby (not sure about ND555). Being the owner of a 500 system .... and having it powered all the time .... it does produce noticeable heat - which is not exactly environmentally friendly .... it seems to me that Naim really should start addressing standby in classic components....... Interestingly my NDS is the chief offender of heat output .... it is quite roasty ... so much so...
Which Naim products or combos have given you the most prat or least prat from any era or at any price point? For me, I got the most prat from a CB Nait2, 72/hc/140, Allaes, and the nDAC. I got the least prat from the V1 and 100. An 82/hc/250 was somewhere in the middle from my perspective, although ahead of my old 112/fc/150. I thought the 102 was maybe ahead of the 82 in terms of prat, but behind the 72.
Hi, Currently have Townsend Isolda cable which I am told, is one of the worst cables to use with Naim. I'm happy with the sound but borrowed some Kimber 8TC cable at the weekend and preferred the Townsend. Is it worth looking at NACA5 and what improvements would I expect with Super Lumina or is that overkill for my system? Thanks Gordon
Yesterday i collected my beloved ' 12 Nap 500 after two weeks of residence at LASA premises. Here are a few pics New power module including rear panel Side view of the above Psu Finally at home, being detailed prior of installation on Fraim I switched the system again early afternoon, then yesterday night a night a playing a few cds for an hour or so. First impression is absolutely positive. Above all the midrange seems more textured with less listening fatigue on crescendos. The bass and...
If one has passive SL2s or any speaker close up to the wall is there a potential issue with the Super Lumina plugs at the speaker end having enough room to site properly in the terminals? In other words how much gap does one need between the wall / skirting board and passive SL2s? Super Lumina is obviously different from the NACA5 speaker plugs which sit pretty flush in the terminals. Many thanks for any insight. David
Which would likely give me the best sound quality? My Naim Cd5si player. Or ripped files from Naim Unity Core, and streamed. Or indeed any other CD ripper and streamer combination?
I wonder if Mr Sells at Naim did design the Nova noticing his earlieer statements he made in a connection magazine interview. "SS: I think it’s the musicality. It’s something where you drift off into the performance. You listen to some products and you get that precise imaging and lots of detail, and that can be quite enticing. But I think for the long-term appeal of a component it needs to convey the emotion. That’s the main thing we listen for. SS: Pace, rhythm and timing – if you can sit...
I have an Olive active system. Primarily play Roon ALAC rips via DAC-V1 into 82/Supercap/SNAXO2-4/Supercap/4 x 135s/Allaes. All amps have been recently serviced and the system sounds great. I love the Olive sound and anyway can't afford to get more modern kit, but keep wondering about the 52 vs the 82. Given I primarily use ALAC rips and rarely CD or vinyl am I going to get a big improvement with a 52 over the 82? What say you? My heart says do it as then there's nowhere else left to go in...
Anyone going? Damn, meant to put this in HiFi corner, can you oblige? Richard.
Recommend and comment on best method for connecting the NAC 272 PreAmp/Streamer to the Uniti CORE for best audio sound. Right now I've connected via direct good quality ethernet cable. Interested in feedback on direct digital connection..... Cheers!
Background: replaced my Levinson 326 PreAmp with a Naim NAC 272; added Uniti Core; upgraded all cables with transparent; kept Levinson 432 amp. Problem: When powering up or off the ML amp; horrid loud pop and crackle thru Wilson Duettes; did not exist before when controlled by my ML 326 preamp. Does not matter if NAC 272 PreAmp is off first or not; once preamp is powered up; loud pop and crackle. This is worrisome! Hope to test out Naim 250DR or 300DR amp to see if there is a difference and...
Being, as we all know, the world divided between those who know and don't tell and those who tell but don't know, who will I address to have an answer to this: is the HDX to be replaced by an HDX2 or are we just saying goodbye to it? Thanks for all replies: imaginary, reticent, self assured and assuming. Max
I've just received my fully serviced and DR'd 500 back from Naim via my dealer. I had to wait until the wife was in bed before installing and playing it quite quietly. Six albums later I noticed that it was 3am in the morning. I thought the jump from 135's to a stock 500 was big but the 500DR is just a different animal. Whie my 500 has been away I reinstalled my trusty old 135's that have been sleeping in my loft. I also manged to get one or two minor issues sorted out and and thought the...
Hi I am thinking of putting a second mini system together .... I always liked the original Nait .... but which is the best one........
Am I right to assume that with the introduction of the new Uniti series Naim is moving away from their signature sound ( emotional envolment.Pratt) to a more generally acepted overall Hifi and there fore cleaner sound. I just recently bought a Nova and after two weeks running in I think it is a fantastic sound but without emotion. Hard to describe sound but I am a little disapointed .
