Dear Naim, my wife, Silvia, says she's amazed at the absence of an app for smartphones to go to the forum directly. She's not a member, but I am, so I have been thinking about it. When the new forum format came out many criticized it , but I didn't, realizing it was excellent for smartphones (and writing so). So, why not? Thanks, Max (on behalf of Silvia).
Gorgeous weekend here and we took my nice old car for a long run across country roads of N Yorkshire on Saturday, playing V8 tunes off the drystone walls and generally loving the spring sunshine. As ever the case on the roads around us each sunny weekend we saw lots of motorbikes, many driven well but a very significant percentage driven dangerously and often illegally fast. No number of signs alerting drivers to the numbers of fatalities on each route seems to dissuade. Some of the antics...
The navigation around the Forum has changed on my iPhone. Is it just me? Technophobe.
A couple of days ago, I sat down to convert a 14 CD audiobook (The Hour Game) into an audiobook file suitable for use with itunes, so that I could put it on my iPhone to listen to in the car. In the past, I have done this using Toast Titanium 12 on my iMac. This time the program had a conniption, because one of the discs had been incorrectly labelled by the manufacturer as being by Bachman Turner Overdrive, and not David Baldacci. This meant that it generated 2 part files, with different...
Just read the news that Emma Murano, an Italian woman who was the oldest person in the world, died today aged 117 years 137 days. She was not only the oldest person, she was also - as far as anyone knows - the very last person left alive to have been ben born in the 19th century. So, a living link with the past has been severed. Quite sobering stuff, really. The lady had a fairly remarkable life: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-39610937 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emma_Morano
Decided to start re-reading the (hardback) copy of "The Ancestor's Tale" by Richard Dawkins yesterday. I hate to say it, but a few times I found myself trying to turn the page by 'swiping' as if I were using my Kindle. Am I getting brain-washed?
There's a new mag out, Long Live Vinyl . It's on issue 2, bought it earlier, seems pretty good. Much more about collecting, shopping, shops and the "vinyl lifestyle" than about hi-fi (although there are TT reviews) and the minutae of SQ. Issue 2 is out now, with features on Da Floyd, and a nice piece on Will (Goldfrapp) Gregory's fave vinyl LPs. He has immaculate taste, as you'd expect. There's a free flexi (oh, the memories!) with tracks by DIY electro-pioneer Thomas Leer and US oddballs...
Since my teens I have had a life long interest in the Battlefelds of the Somme as well as other WW1 regions of conflict. Not sure why this is, the obvious paying of respects is clearly a part of it. I make regular visits, read books, study trench maps and walk the areas of carnage and sacrifice. Just curios if any other forum members have a similar affliction? While the Somme is 'my thing' I have also visited Verdun, Ypres, Vimy, Reims amongst others. Stu
I use 'AdBlock' & 'Ghostery' to reduce unwanted nuisance adverts & web snooping. I've been told they don't do what you think they do but did not have the opportunity to ask why. I have to say it does prevent a lot of adds that I don't want. Any forum IT geeks have opinions on this subject & any suggestions for the best/effective brand (if there is one)
So here's a crazy idea. Give us your hi-fi system based on public figures. Of course upgrades are allowed when you feel the itch. I'm tempted to say 'non music' figures, but let's not be too dogmatic. Here's my starter system, obliviously I have nagging doubts about the balance of the system, but I'm going to live with it for a while before deciding how/whether to upgrade. The worlds greatest cycling race is about to start, full live coverage on British Eurosport. Six solid hours of entertainment. This years race see the retirement of Tom Boonen, let’s hope he goes out with an unprecedented fifth win. I recon he’s got a chance, if he doesn’t fall off.
I've been watching this for a few weeks and I think it could be the germ of a very successful and popular programme. In short, people bring in their (not especially valuable, or even pretty) treasures to be worked on and fixed. Short at 1/2 hour, so little coverage of the repairs but enough to be involving and engaging. I can imagine it not only apealing to forum members but has potential to be an under the radar winner for BBC2 and can see it developing a wider fan base.
I'm sure you have read some posts that have made you laugh out loud just for their humour, not that the advice was silly.... This was one I read recently when there was a speaker discussion. Camlan wrote " It's sad to see how this forum is slipping. 24 Hours gone by and not one poster has suggested second hand SBLs as the only sensible option. " Again its brought a big smile! So does anyone else remember a great post?
News of the diesel scrappage plans comes as it emerged just 78,778 diesel cars were sold in January, 4.3 per cent less than last year. Chris Grayling, the Transport Secretary and a close ally of Prime Minister Theresa May , is believed to support the radical initiative. He said: "The irony is that a decade ago, because of concerns about carbon emissions there was a drive towards diesel... that we now know has a different set of negative effects. (Losely translated this reads like "we screwed...
I few may have noticed the number of my posts fell off a cliff over the past few weeks. It's not random. I have decided to leave the forum and the excellent folk who inhabit it. Kudos to Naim and the members who made it such an entertaining place with fascinating discussion. In general I disdain at social networking and am a grumpy grouch that shuns Facebook and the like - the Naim forum being the only place, other than work related forums, that I have ever cared to spend any time in. And I...
Dear Mr Assad Please return to killing hundreds of thousands of your population with the indiscriminate use of high explosive munitions including cluster weapons and barrel bombs. Continue to target hospitals. make sure that disease and famine further decimate your enemies but whatever you do make sure you do not kill 60 or so people with a chemical weapon again. If that should happen again, in lieu of any coherent policy, a western power with a President in no way desperate to enforce his...
Has anyone any feedback regarding what difference it made to the over all sound... if you give your point of veiw hat would be great..
Looking at ideas from the forum members please. I plan on having a 7 day visit by myself to the UK in December this year whist my family visit relatives in Madeira, Portugal. Have been to London 3 years ago only for a short 4 day stop over, however I did see a number of places such as the Tower, Natural History Museum, Churchill War rooms, and a few general bus tours of central London / Westminster / Buckingham Palace to see changing of the guard. I would like to spend another 2-3 days...
It now appears that Nigel Farage and his buddy & political donor Arron Banks have been hired to promote an effort to split California in two and potentially gain Independence from the US. I almost couldn't believe this when I saw a report on this on TV in the US (it's not quite April Fools' day yet), but it appears to be true. He's now being shown up for the self serving money grabbing opportunist many of us believed he was from the outset. Even more outrageous that the person who runs...
In case anyone else enjoys this ( like me) and has seen no adverts for its return (like me), it is on right now. Got round the issue of our crappy weather, they're in Australia! And it's very nice to look at...
Anybody updated to this yet? Any issues for our iPADs with the naim app?
I have just sat through the recording of Friday nights Comic Relief. After putting most of it on fast forward, I am Very pleased, I didn't watch it live. Apart from a couple of brief sketches, I thought it was unfunny, cringeworthy, embarrassing, possibly one of the most unpleasant comic relief programmes I've ever seen..... In the past its always been generally entertaining, but whoever put this programme together, needs sacking .... How they have managed to raise over 70 million is very...
I had a dream - but it's been shattered by Brexit and Scottish Independence. The dream turned into a nightmare .................. TM has SOLD the UK , lock, stock and barre l to China. Yes !. the land (farming and recreation), the natural resources (including oil and gas), the infrastructure (Power stations, electricity grid, water, gas, sewage system, roads, railways bridges, ports and airports, schools, hospitals, Local Authorities), all our houses, hotels and businesses, (the car...
Once there was a forum about a great Hifi company and all things music related. Where has it all gone?
I recently bought a new car from a well respected British car manufacturer with great heritage, but not under British ownership anymore. To my disbelief the windscreen wipers don't work. I'm told by the manufacturer that they are aware of the problem and a software upgrade will come out in Mid April which will allow the wipers to work. I cannot believe that a reputable company could release a product when they knew it lacked some basic functionality. They have a very active forum and...
