Any views on how much longer the search should go on in the absence of confirmed debris or new information?   What if they find confirmed debris? How long should they spend then looking for the "black box" and recovering wreckage?   I'm not...

I'm conscious that our American cousins read this forum, I just want say this post is somewhat tongue in cheek dudes... Browsing higherfi I note the approximate ten X price factor: Turntable: $300k The Dereneville VPM cf. LP 12 Limited Edition £25k Power Amplifier: $650k The Pivetta is hilarious weighing in at at one and a half tons and requires 6,400 amps from one's consumer unit. I guess one could get a small substation built for a few £100k. But it does deliver 160,000 watts. Oddly enough...

The BBC made a superb 26 part series on "The Great War" in 1964.    This link is to a youtube of a bonus episode [released later], and this brings us face to face with the recollections of the men themselves. It requires no commentary. There is no commentary in the film.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaRaL5Pqz68   ATB from George

To the wet shavers out there - the ones that still use a brush and a double edged razor, what shaving cream do you use? What brush, what razor and blades?

The history.   As some of you know, I have been a Naim fan for two decades and a music fan for much longer.   The overview.   I have been a lurker on this site, then an active poster, then, more recently, a lurker again, etc., but I...

A 'new' wine (Champagne) has entered the market. Or is trying to. The London-based 'brand' (which in itself tells much) has been touting itself to all and sundry at the Monaco Yacht Show (a reasonable idea for placement given what they are doing, but it does expose that some of the claims on their website are merely aspirations) and I was asked for my opinion on it by three different people, so I did some digging. I blogged about it here: http://www.rivierawineacademy.com/blog.php In...

I have been offered a free upgrade to optical [with a very much faster speed than the wired version] broadband, and have accepted. The engineer is installing the new internal terminal later in July.   All I want is a stable broadband with no dropouts for internet radio, so the system will be massively over-specified, but it is gratis, so why not? Otherwise my payments remain the same as I am well out of my initial contractual period ...   ATB from George

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-28838947   I have very little sympathy (ie none) for anyone who complains about noise after they have moved into a property from a source that was there before they arrived.   It doesn't matter...

Both senior politicians have gone down in my estimation, having submitted to the current moronic trend of the 'Ice Bucket Challenge'. Some challenge. Get wet and lose your dignity.   I was pleased to hear that the Prime Minister has risen above...

So now we have senior politicians engaging in this moronic pursuit.   All part of the insidious dumbing down of society I suppose.   Ah; but it's for charity, so only a spoilsport or someone who doesn't want votes could refuse to take part....

This is an old English steel frame of exquisite lightness, and nicely finessed making. It might even be a Carlton though there is no real proof. The last photo shows the bike before I stripped it down, and next to it my [definitely 1984] Carlton.   The frame is booked in to Argos Racing Cycles at Bristol for a re-enamel, and then I'll gradually build the cycle up again with the idea of preserving its original five speed configuration, and 27 inch wheels.    It is...

http://www.cs.tau.ac.il/~tromer/acoustic/ "Many computers emit a high-pitched noise during operation, due to vibration in some of their electronic components. These acoustic emanations are more than a nuisance: they can convey information about the software running on the computer, and in particular leak sensitive information about security-related computations. In a preliminary presentation (Eurocrypt’04 rump session), we have shown that different RSA keys induce different sound patterns,...

On Monday I have a 13:00 hours appointment with a top NHS consultant about my CSR problem. CSR is Central Serous [Chorio-] Retinopathy. This is a very rare disease, incurable, and the reasons for it are little understood.    It manifests as a chronic disease that settles down - remission phase - and usually the end result is not too problematic, though each attack makes things worse. In my case - at my third attack -  I am to be assessed to find if I may drive once again. If...
