I've just tried a borrowed Vax upright machine, and it's a noisy horrible piece of kit. I think it has made the carpet wet, foamy in some areas, and when it eventually dries I might be able to see if it cleaned the carpet. In the machine's defence, the owner is a real Mrs Mop, always cleaning, and uses the wrong cleaning fluid in the tank. The machine only cost about £90 around 7-10 years ago, so I might be expecting too much. Any help gratefully received Tony
