quote:
hopefully for the next record they'll forget the songs completely and go for sonic chaos. I get the feeling they're itching to.
A lot of my favourite music has always captured that balance between noise and structure - Husker Du, Sonic Youth, MBV, YLT, The Velvets at their best - I think Wilco are moving into this territory, a bit like Lambchop 'cept they keep the noise as a niggling undercurrent.I think this record, like O'Rourke's solo records, works well as a exploration of the relationship between melody and raw sound. And I love Tweedy's new guitar style, really raw and disonant.

I know what you mean about the noise/structure thing, I like that too. I just think Wilco need to make a bigger leap. I have the feeling they might end up making a really interesting record if they do, they always seem to be on the verge of discovering something really good but never quite make it, IMO.

Oooh, This is Our Music. That's a fantastic record. I will dig that out for a play tonight.
I'd be interested in how Today compares?
Simon
PS AG - you have PT (unrelated topic)

Faded Seaside Glamour, the Delays; bhazen gets modern (again). Great pop album by this English quartet, reminscent of the Sundays and Cocteau Twins. Atmospheric guitars and vocals; a sleeper. A break from buying Jethro Tull remasters or whatever...

Simon,
I haven't done that comparison but I might soon. I'm very tired after reading Mensa Mick's posts so it will have to wait until tomorrow at the earliest.

Anthony Braxton: For Alto: the Penguin guide to jazz on cd thinks this is one of the most important American recordings: it is certainly an uncompromising but also exhilirating record of solo saxophone pushing the limits of the instrument and of jazz.
Miles Davis: Pangaea: 70's Miles at hismost uncompromising. Two 40 minute tracks of electric jazz improvisation that bear no relation at all to Kind of Blue.
Bill Frisell: Quartet. A really good Frisell record: Guitar, violin, trumpet, trombone. From modern ambient downtown improv.(now there's a pretentious sub-genre!) to a twisted take on trad.
And the more I read of The Penguin Guide the more I like it.I've always like the way Cook and Morton write. This is informative and authoritative and written in a way that makes we want to get hold of the records to hear them. There's a whole bunch of Sun Ra records I now need to hunt down and I realise I've missed some key recordings by all sorts of people - Coltrane, Blythe, Coleman, Ayler, Taylor, EST,even John McLaughlin ..... Should make sure I have very little spare money over the coming months.
A good week!

Finn Brothers, Everyone Is Here...wonderful. I've only listened to it twice, but could be the best thing since Neil's Try Whispering This, or maybe even Woodface. Neil's songs just get me in a very emotional way...it's a very dry recording, dessicated even, continuing a trend in the Finn's stuff for the last few years...but oh, those songs, played & sung by those singers...

Jah Wobble, I Could Have Been a Contender. Ace 3 CD compilation on Trojan, with entertaining sleevenotes by the man himself (on good form). I stopped buying Wobble records years ago, for no good reason, must put that right and check out some of his recent stuff.

Ian,
Some of the 30Hz stuff has been quite good, Like Deep Space Network and Molam Dub.
Not too keen myself on the William Blake readings, but there you go.
DS
ITC - Pere Ubu - Datapanik in the Year Zero 1975 - 1977

Richard Buckner, Since. The cut titled "Ariel Ramirez", currently featured in a VW Touareg commercial, prompted me to buy the cd. It's a nice, earthy, Son Volt-ish kinda roots thing, mostly acoustic with a few rockers mixed in. Great songwriting.

Cheers David, there's a couple of the Molam Dub tracks on the compilation, very good stuff so will definitely check out that album.

Bang Bang Machine - Geek Love
From eBay, trying to get hold of this since it featured in Peel's Festive 50 about 12 years ago. And, er, no, it doesn't sound like the future of music (which I thought at the time).

Anthony Braxton: 23 Standards: a limited edition 4 cd set containing great versions of... 23 standards - Coltrane, Brubeck(!!), Davis, and others. One of the best cds I've bought for ages. Wonderful playing, utterly engaging and listenable yet also quite challenging. A interesting alternative to the Jarrett standards trio, really trying to make something new out of familiar material rather than just nostalgic reworkings.
Stevie Wonder:Music of my Mind - purely for Mary Wants to Be A Superwoman. The rest is
ok-ish but no "Talking Book".

Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned Hmmm, bit disappointed with this so far maybe because its not as immediately bangin' as 'The Fat of the Land'.
The Finn Brothers - Everyone is Here Very well written songs on this as you'd expect from the Finns of course!
Roy Orbison - The Platinum Collection The ear worm inside my head has been playing 'You Got It' and 'I Drove All Night' for some reason recently so I thought I'd placate it with this 3CD set.
