Sinopoli recorded the 8th Symphony in the early '80's with the Philharmonia (along with Mendelssohn's Italian symphony) -
Not only are they splended performances but the recording is very good. Has been a favourite since I bought it in the mid '80. I think that it is still available on DG Masters

Karl,
By consensus, Sinopoli's first recording outclasses his Dresden remake. But I'm primarily interested in the 9th (which is great in the right hands, but usually ends up being slightly forgettable). The snippets I've heard are promising, but looking forward to hear the whole thing.

Hope it meets your expectation. I only have one recording of the 9th, Solti on Decca which I must have bought at the same time at the Sinopoli disc - must dig it out and give it a listen.

And Good Morning to you Debs,
Yes, it’s quite a collection. I’d been aware of Kovacevich’s playing of Beethoven in these works for many years and when the set came out did not hold back. The recording quality is good as well, not in the Decca league but better than most – I find the piano sound fabulous on my recently upgraded system – seeSupernait - Queries
I can recommend the following Brendel disc, it’s been in my collection for years and gets an occasional airing - see Brendel - Eroica Variations
Enjoy the discs when they arrive

What do you think? It is not the easiest way in to the Captain's music - you really need to grow fins to appreciate the beauty of this record.quote:Originally posted by BigH47:
