Flettster, what do you make of the Iron And Wine? Intrigued me at first but I'm not getting to like it more with repeat listens. Not a keeper I think.

Feel free to ignore my opinion though as apparently I'm the only person on here who thinks John Grant is over-rated (after the excellent first 3 or 4 tracks anyway)!

Hi Bruce,

Been away on business this week, so lot's of driving & listening to CD's. I've listened to the Iron & Wine album 3 times all the way through (unusual for me, as I tend to skip tracks that don't make too big an impression) I must say I didn't feel the urge to skip any of them.

Whether this will end up being as memorable as The Sheperd's Dog is doubtful. The outstanding tracks on the new album IMO are Monkey & Rabbit Will Run. I tend to like the style of his last 2 albums rather than the more folky earlier releases.

Cheers

Have you tried 'Woman King' and 'In The Reins' (his collaboration with Calexico)? Probably both are more like Shepherd Dog and the new album than his earlier whispering folk (that I think I prefer).

And the notorious Turandot. I was very happy to find that Sony applied the Living Stereo remastering treatment to this recording - I haven't had much luck with remasterings in general, but the few I've heard in this series have been consistently excellent.

Some really good purchases this week that I have been enjoying lots

Woodpigeon: Die Stadt Muzikanten. Follow up to the excellent 'Treasure Library Cnada' this is moe ambitous and poppy with added choirs and a bit more electic guitar. Definite shades of Great Lake Swimmers etc. No idea why it has a german title!

The Phoenix Foundation: Buffalo Summery psychedelic tinged indie-pop, great songs if a bit one-paced after a while but a very pleasant listen. Think Avi Buffalo, even Grand Drive?

Josh T Pearson: Last Of the Country Gentleman. Stripped back confessional country, acoustic guitar and not much else.  Not an easy listen but I think is going to reward repeated efforts.

I think quick reviews are more useful than pics. More likely to inspire me to check the albums out  if others do the same.
