I would emphatically second that. Recently discovered her new one by accident. What a lucky accident, what a voice. Have now also ordered her first one after borrowing a copy from library.

Hi, Glenn, did you listen to (or do you own) "Stumble Into Grace" from Emmylou Harris ? It's said to be SO different. I haven't spent time on her, yet, but after my latest Johnny Cash experience, I might wanna dive into recent US country...

Drive-by Truckers "The Dirty South"
Elliott Smith "From A Basement On The Hill"

The Truckers just keep on rockin' (Isbell, only in his early twenties, what a musical future)

And, in Elliott's offering, a very complex person, gone way too quickly. We'll never know what his musical future would have brought.

Stealers Wheel, Ferguslie Park; a remaster/re-release on Lemon. Great Gerry Rafferty/Joe Egan tunes, a generally Beatle-esque ambience, or perhaps Badfinger-esque, at times; an underrated band, did a lot more than provide a tune for a Tarantino soundtrack.

Sounds like Dylan singing on Let It Be.

minky - This is his new one. i.e stuff he had recorded just before his death. Pretty good acording to several reviews I have read, though I can't comment myself.

Jeff - I'd be very interested in what you think and how it compairs to his others (assuming you have some). I have Either/Or, XO and Figure 8

re: Elliott Smith "From A Basement On The Hill"

This was/is the album Elliott had just completed recording when he died. The post produdtion work was done by two close friends - a girlfriend and a musician in a band whose name escapes me at the moment.

I also have Either/Or and XO. As with them, the new one is a mixture of Elliott's styles. I have always loved the quieter more simply produced songs, the closer to just him and a guitar the better. When we were listening to one of the tracks Saturday, I commented to my wife "This must be what it would have been like to her Lennon with just a guitar". His songs which have a Beatlesque quality to them are just phenomenal to me. Also, because of the circumstances, it is hard not to listen for clues to what was going on in the last couple years.

If I was personally ranking these three, my favorite remains Either/Or, then the new one (which I have only played 4 times so far) and finally XO which is a little slick for my preferences.
