Michael Stanley and the Resonators
"Instant Live" Tower City Amphitheatre, Cleveland Ohio 06/19/04

This is my first try at an "Instant Live" recording. These are recorded at the show and burned and available commercially on your way out afterwards (and obviously, available later, as well). Must say I am not impressed with the recording quality, but the show is excellent and worth having in my collection.

Greg Tannen "Roam"
Greg Tannen "Coney Island"

Very much like these, think Jack Johnson only with better songs, or an acoustic John Mayer. Greg is a NY based singer/songwriter.

The Weepies "Happiness"
Love this as well. This is Greg's brother Steve Tannen and his significant-other Deb Talen, both excellent singer/songwriters recently relocated to LA from Boston. Have seen them live several times and love their solo and duo (Weepies) work.

The latest two volumes of John Zorn's 50th birthday series, both look like they should be magnificent: Vol 7, Masada, Vol 8, Zorn/Wadada Leo Smith/Susie Ibarra. Both recorded live at Tonic NYC summer 2003.

Joel Harrison - So long 2nd street: The logical continuation of his other ACT recording. Less experimental, more stream lined, and consistant.
Hille Perl - J.S. Bach, per la viola da gamba: My third Hille Perl CD, and I'm starting to be a real H.P. fan. Closesly oriented along the Bach Cello suites, the Solo Suite for Viola da Gamba, plus two other pieces of chamber music. Well worth listening.
Paul Goodwin, Acadamy of Ancient Music - Mozart, Zaide

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

"Everything" by Tones On Tail. Two-disc set representing their entire (?) output.

Very fun. Shame there isn't more to explore.

STEFAN -

Afraid I am not a huge fan of the Arve Henriksen CD. It has a slow moody feeling of Nils Petter Molvaer with some strange vocals on one track. No real melody just a whiny trumpety atmosphere.

Not a recommendation from me.

NICK - on the other hand the Eberhard Weber is excellent. Must have been very leading edge in it's day and still very accessible and challenging now, but with lots of good melodics.

I am off to order a batch of Eberhard Weber CD's from CDconnection.com - priced at 13/14 US dollars - at today's excellent US/£ exchange rate makes them a bargain.

thx, Adrian, I will put Henriksen off my list, then. I know your musical preferences good enough by now, that I don't have to waste money on that one...

today's Amazon delivery:

L'arpeggiata (Pluhar, Trovesi, et al) - All'Improvviso: Beautiful Renaissance+Baroque music from the area of Bergamo (Italy), recorded in a Paris church, come home with your head tense with work, put on this stuff and feel how you relax second after second. Also true for:
Los Otros (Hille Perl et al) - Tinto: Actually the first of two records; have heard the second (...Aguirre...) and couldn't withstand the magic.

Phew - obviously Winter's arrived. Stefan switches from Jazz to classical. Again. Besides: Snow flakes all over, outside...

Best regards, freundliche Grüße

Appalachian Picking Society -- I think it might do for acoustic-flatpick-banjo (etc) music what the Buena Vista Social Club did for Afro-Cuban Jazz. Sonics are gorgeous.

Kings of Leon, "Youth and Young Manhood" --These guys play like they're the first people on earth to discover rock and roll. Which shouldn't surprise when you read their bio. Very good -- maybe even a lttle dangerous for driving.

Alison Krauss + Union Station: Lonely Runs Both Ways. First few listens and it sounds right up with 'New Favourite' although perhaps lacking a really standout track. Superb audio quality and musicianship.

I've a feeling quite a few on the forum will like this.

Some oldies but goodies:

Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair

Ramones - Boxed set of the Rhino remixes of Anthology and Hey Ho Let's Go! - A must for the roots of punk collector.

The Allman Brothers Band - The Road Goes On Forever, A collection of their greatest recordings. Interesting, but the original vinyl recordings are still superior.

Led Zeppelin - Early Days & Latter Days, the best of Led Zeppelin Volumes One & Two. This is an enhanced CD, but again the original vinyl of the recordings is still superior.

The Byrds - The Essential Byrds. Great anthology and musical journey through the many changes that the Byrds went through from start to finish.

The Smiths - Best I and Best II. If you are only going to own a single Smiths compilation set, this is the one.

Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing, the very best of Dire Straits. Vinyl is still better but nice to have most of the best on a single CD.

10,000 Maniacs - Campfire Songs, the popular, obscure and unknown recordings. Interesting collection of material, Rhino remix again.

Definite new stuff:

Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News. Quirky, almost infectiuous, alt rock.

The Tea Party - Seven Circles. The guys from Montreal just keep trucking along with their infectuious brand of rock.

Eric Clapton - Me and Mr. Johnson. Slowhand covers some of the best blues by Robert Johnson. Not bad, but you should track down the original Robert Johnson versions.

The Tragically Hip - In Between Evolution. Quientisential Canadian Rock from the boys from Kingston.

Sarah McLachlan - Live Acoustic. A 5 song EP CD of the some of her best but as acoustic only. Includes Fallen, Adia, Angel, Building a Mystery and Answer.

Leonard Cohen - Dear Heather. The bard's latest offering and jazzier than most of his previous work. Grows on you with each listen.

And for the Classical Fans:

Glen Gould - And Serenity. Classic recordings of the master of the piano from the vaults of the CBC and Sony. A Sony Legacy recording.

Rosanna & Zelia - Aguas = Iguais: Two singers from Brasil delivering "non Brasil" (like butt shaking, Carnival kinda) music between emotional and cheerful. Nice one.
Anne-Sophie Mutter - Tchaikovsk, Korngold: Has been discussed lenghty on this forum already
Sara K. - The Chesky Collection: For teh sake of completeness...
Abdullah Ibrahim - A celebration
Coleman Hawkins - The Genius of...
