Dear Kuma,

Some things in life are sweet! Like sharing enthusiasms over music!

I like to share my enthusiasm for music that I love. Why I can still get up in the morning and work ....

Your posts only enhance my pleasure in life.

Thanks from George

George & EJ,

Thanks for fueling my classical music re-discovery journey.

I have so much catch up to do and a bit overwhelming but when I hear something good, something that appeals to my heart, makes me realise the power of music.

OK ... so we've all got the original LPs, the reissues on 180g vinyl, the original CD, SHM CD, SACD, but how there are new box sets with DVD-Audio, New 2012 stereo mix and 5.1 (shame I haven't got a 5.1 system) and a DVD video and a booklet by one of those rock journalist fellows so it was an essential addition to the collection ... it's the show that never ends

If you hate prog-rock then you'll hate this, but if you are the type of Guy who thinks new groups like I Don't Believe It's Not Focus are where it's at then this is a sensational collection for £10 ... the full Emersonsion .... progressive rock music didn't get any better than the first 5 albums from these dudes.

So I've just put it on and am thinking oh what lucky may I am ....

Does anybody know the plural of Tarkus (Tarki, Tarkuses)? i

Today waiting for me at the office:

(why oh why did those corporate fools at Decca decide to abandon this Ring after Walküre? At the time, the story was they couldn't find a good Siegfried. Considering what Bayreuth is making do with today, must not have been impossible...)

- The aforementioned Beethoven 4 & 5 by Arrau and Davis

- The aforementioned Mozart symphonies by Krips

A new studio recording of Carmen; EMI keeps up a fine tradition of serving up a new Carmen for every new generation of singers - this one has Magdalena Kozena (Rattle's partner) and Jonas Kaufman. I'll post a review on the ...listening... thread once I've had the chance to do a complete listen. Not enough opera on here!

Cheers,

EJ

Zimerman/Viena phil: Beethoven Piano Concerto 1&2

Posted on: 30 August 2012 by Simon-in-Suffolk

German Lounge Jazz used in their films and TV in the 60s was sooo groovy. Erwin Halletz is one of the better composers. This CD has a great sleeve with superb info and photos.

Karine Polwart: Traces-see the Kate Rusby thread

Antony + The Johnsons:  Cut The World. Live with an orchestra and different arrangements, just one new song.

Like so much he does it varies from the almost transcendent to the very strange (a 6 mnute lecture on the need for the feminisation of the world is unlikely to be played that often).

Also just ordered Calexico: Algiers and The XX: Coexist

Arrived via amazon.uk (other sellers) today...

Yello - baby [mercury (p) 1991]

Pre-owned cd for £3.25 to include postage.

Looks like it maybe an original 1991,

it needed a soapy wash, rinse, and towel dry to get the grubby finger marks off but it has cleaned up nice and plays superbly [...with no nasty loudness].

On pre-order for next month.

It took three months between placing the order and receiving the package, but today the last item on my 'out-of-print must-have Bruckner 8s' arrived: an original issue of Giulini's famous 1985 account with the VPO. I believe it is a studio recording but not sure. It joins the shelf that already holds Karajan/VPO, Haitink/RCO (3x), Haitink/VPO, Chailly/RCO, Sinopoli/Dresden, Wand/BPO and Nezet-Seguin/Montreal.

Note: Guthrie Govan from The Aristocrats is joining the Steven Wilson band when they record in LA later this month. The recording is being overseen by Alan Parsons. I think this might sound pretty good!

Here is Guthrie in one of his teaching videos...
