Last week:
Kasabian
Who Killed The Zutons?
The Kasabian album is highly recommended although it could (rightly) be accused of being more than a little bit primal scream/stone roses

Good "shot", Adrian...
Picked up my US purchase (out of German customs - grrrr) from m.a. recordings that Haim (?) pointed me at.
Absolutely stunning music ! They pick recording locations all over the world and record premium artists and premium material with leading edge technology (including the use of one stereo mic only on most of their records).
Plus - they are a bunch of nice and helpful guys out there in California !
Watch out, ECM ! A world of its own...
Current purchase (to be extended...)
La Segunda - Sera una Noche
Peter Epstein Quartet - The Invisible
Michel Godard - Sous les Voutes, Le Serpent
Kalman Olah Trio - Contrasts & Parallels; I usually don't like classical themes being "modernized", but these interpretations of Goldberg variations have it.
Markus Stochausen, Miroslav Tadic, Mark Naussef - Still Light (For Paracelsus); WOW - Early Stockhausen recording where he takes ALL his time necessary to fill the musical space. Chapeau !
Sheila Jordan & Harvey Swartz - Songs from within; Female Jazz voice and double bass. Reminds Glen Moore and Nancy King - Suberb sound and music
Eduardo Egüez - The Lute Music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Volume One
Eduardo Egüez - The Lute Music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Volume Two

Putumayo presents Cape Verde;
"The Weeping Meadow" Eleni Karaindrou (ECM);
Neil Young's Greatest Hits to test the HDCD - I love my new CDX2 but this disc is struggling to compete with the original albums on my LP12

Pat Metheny Group - The Way Up; Hmh, not very impressed in spite of the raging press this has received...
Lhasa - The Living Road; Shivers down my spine ! What a voice ! Huaaah !
Eleni Mandell - afternoon; can't really explain what fascinates me, but there's something in that super plain music she does. Hmhh. One day I'll find out.

Pat Metheny Group: The Way Up- I agree with sjust, I can't get into it. It is full of PMG cliches. I think his solo and sideman work has been outstanding over the last few years but the group has sort of stagnated, IMHO.

YES ! A permanent deja-vu ! Very much like "Still Life, Talking", for example.
Although... After giving it a second and third run, I must say, the recording has a certain "seriousness", a certain "maturity" in it which has an effect on me I can't describe, yet. Hmh, like a sublime message. Let's see how It grows on me. Interested to hear if you have similar experience, Anthony.

Stopped by at the Virgin today.
I walked out with NO CDs. All records.
The way I'm going, pretty soon, the cost of software will exceed what I spent on a record player.
Stefan,
Finally listened to that Japanese jazz pianist.
I liked few tunes off it. Thanks for the reco!

Hi Stefan,
I agree that there are parts of the recording that show progress but it is so repititious, a comment that Fred Simon made last year in another thread about PMG. I will keep listening because I really think Metheny has grown so much.

Closest to what you normally listen to, probably was "01001010" (or whatever the sequence is...), right ?
Spending more for software than hardware is a concept I like ! (Not at all because I work for a software company )
cheers,
Stefan

Last few weeks:
Johnny Cash Orange Blossom Special - Covers of early Dylan stuff done in his inimitable style.
Tom Waits Rain Dogs - it's Tom Waits innit.
John Cale Slow Dazzle and Paris 1919 - These are definite growers.
Kevin Coyne Sign of the Times - A great compilation of his Virgin recordings.
Cowboy Junkies The Trinity Sessions - You can't go wrong with covers of the Velvet U. and Hank Williams.
Robert Wyatt Rock Bottom - Great stuff.
Fairport Convention Unhalfbricking - I'm got a soft spot for 1970s Folk/Rock.
Richard Thompson Mock Tudor - The always excellent RT.
Loretta Lynn Van Lear Rose - About halfway through the first track I knew I'd made a mistake with this one. She's no female JC as some people have commented. Straight to E-bay my girl.
Half Man Half Biscuit McIntyre Treadmore and Davitt - Any band who can sing about Harry Quinn bikes and Campagnolo are OK by me.

It's probably one of his more accessible albums, I really like it. His voice hasn't got great range but it suits the music if you see what I mean. If he is new to you then it's not a bad place to start. The Amazon web-site has samples of the songs to give you some idea what to expect. Some of his later work, such as Slow Dazzle is more left field. My favourite John Cale album is HoboSapien from a couple of years back which I strongly recommend.
