queen--the highlander sound track
2 x CD plus DVD edition:-
Received today - my most costly CD investment (together with DVD and 24/48 BluRay).
I'm going to have to buy a BluRay drive for my PC now so that I can rip it to the NS01.
Arrived today - the deluxe version of this. although I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet:

I have owned this for quite a few years, and I agree that it's quite excellent. Another interesting piano version of the Pictures is the one by Ashkenazy on Decca. He revisited the score, and plays the version that he thinks is the one intended by Mussorgsky. Also on that cd, is an orchestral version of Pictures with Ashkenazy conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra. Well worth checking out!
If you want to try another piano recording of the Pictures, I suggest the recording by Byron Janis on Mercury. On the same cd, is an excellent orchestral Pictures with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra under Antal Dorati. I'll stop here.

Deep Purple - Made in Japan Rhino Remaster
Hi Geofiz -
Am interested in your opinion of this "Made in Japan" reissue. My old US gatefold (Warner Brothers 2WS 2701, 1973) has seen better days. Gave album one a listen this evening -- a good reminder of how great a rock singer Ian Gillian was back then! It was fun comparing the live version of "Child in Time" to the studio version on "Deep Purple in Rock". Been years since I've done that!

Hi Hook,
Just finished spinning the silver disc in the CDS3 and does sound very good. I must admit that I have nothing to compare this remaster to, as, believe it or not this is the first installment of Deep Purple in my collection. Considering the price paid ($5) for the disc at the local HMV shop, I would say it was very good purchase. The live version of "smoke on the water" is much better than the studio version I remember and quite a different version from that on the other disk purchased at the same time. Production values on Made in Japan are higher and, I assume that the mastering was different. Much prefer the Made in Japan variants of the same songs.
