Try "Love Songs" - she sings in her native Czech and this is the one that convinced me.

This was playing on the in car CD player when I got stopped for speeding in the US - I didn't get a ticket Roll Eyes

I will re-try, Huw !
(and keep a copy in the car. Just in case...)

Stefan -

Aldo Romano - don't know what you heard all those years ago that put you off.

Anyway you must try two CD's of his. They are

Non Dimenticar

Canzoni

This is by his Italian quartet or quintet - can't remember which - including one of the best trumpet playets I know, Paolo Fresu (if you do not have any of his CD's I can recommend a few!)

These two CD's are beautiful renditions of Italian Neapolitan songs jazz style - extremely tuneful - makes you want to drink a bottle of Chianti whilst cruising on a gondola in Venice - aahhh....

Adrian,
will check Aldo Romano Winker

Gianluigi Trovesi, Gianni Coscia - Round About Weil - Have seen them 2 years ago and was overwhelmed by their poetry. Will see them again, very soon...

post scriptum: "The Ground" (Tord Gustavsen Trio) is marvellous - as expected

Graham Coxon, Happiness In Magazines; just got it today, haven't even slit the shrinkwrap. Will the Britpopper in me like it, I wonder?

Hi Adrian,
I wasn't overwhelmed by the Bright Eyes album - what's YOUR thought ?

Nguyen Le - Walking on the Tiger's Tail - A must, also because there's Paul McCandless in the band
Michel Godard, ... - Trio Rouge - On the traces of Erika Pluhar, Trovesi, etc.
Heinz Sauer, Michael Wollny - Melancholia - Old meets Young meets Old... A German Sax Dyno meets one of the rising stars on German Jazz piano
Richard Galliano - Ruby, My Dear
Paolo Fresu - Plays the music of Roberto Cipelli - to start with, Adrian. Can you recommend other Fresu CDs ?
Posted on: 12 March 2005 by Squonk
Stefan -

Two Paolo Fresus to try are

Melos - my favourite - a beautiful masterpiece
Night on the City - almost as good

Others worth looking at are

Wanderlust
Kind of Porgy and Bess
Metamorfosi
Angel

Bright Eyes is OK but not special. I bought it as I am going to see him suporting REM in a couple of weeks - not really something that will get too many plays out of my collection.

I ordered Nguyen Le - Walking on the Tiger's Tail - waiting for it to arrive

New ECM our soon - Trovesi/Coscia - Round about Weill, Charles Lloyd - Jumping the Creek, Saluzzi/Christensen - Senderos

I've had this for a couple of months and I've got to admit it didn't really grab me initially (after pretty much the best reviews of any album I've seem this year). However it really is a grower and the melodies seep into your soul after a few weeks (and maybe 6 - 8 listens). This is now one of my favourites of the year.

Post scriptum to a CD I had bought last week (sorry, too much messing around with the Cremonas...)

Ralph Towner / Gary Peacock - A Closer View - This CD from 1995 is AWSOME !!! Such a great piece of music making. Double bass and guitar with most involving dialogs. Gosh ! This can suck me in for hours and hours and hours !

Stefan
PS:
Adrian, you probably have this. If you don't: Run !
greeny, thx for the feed back. A case for spinning it in the car, then...

So Frenchy, So Chic - first rate compilation of current sounds fom France - some excellent tracks - the unofficial soundtrack to the Sydney French Film Festival

Josh Rouse - 1972

Yello - Essential

The Waifs - A Brief History

Eskimo Joe - A Song Is A City

Simon & Garfunkel - Old Friends Live on Stage - much more enjoyable that I expected - nostalgic

Jack Johnson - On and On - more summery laid back sounds

Jack Johnson - Brushfire Fairytales

All quiet on the jazz front this week....

Stefan - yes I do have the Towner/Peacock you mentioned - have not played it in years so will give it a listen again.

Art Ensemble of Chicago - Tribute to Lester

Cheers

Helene Grimaud playing Chopin and Rachmaninoff sonatas. She plays just wonderful, but the recording is very "round-earth". The piano sound as if it is 10 meters wide. Too much engineering?

Earth - In the Gleam of an Unsheathed Sword
Maurizio - M-Series

DS

OTD - Meloboy - Hot Love

A bit of a splurge, which will probably be last for a while now that I have pulled the trigger on a Fraim:

Low - Things we lost in the fire
Mogwai - Government Commissions (something to keep the neighbours on their toes)
Otis Taylor - The Truth is not Fiction (excellent)
This Mortal Coil - It'll end in tears (couldn't find the LP, and the single "Song to the Siren" seems to be on its last legs)
Françoise Hardy - Tant de belle choses (tempted me to smoke a Gauloise and drink some Pastis Smile )
Savina Yannatou & Primavera en Salonico - Sumiglia (excellent, songs from Greece, Spain, Italy, Corsica and much of eastern Europe)
Dino Saluzzi & Jon Christensen - Senderos (up next on the CD player)
Tord Gustavsen Trio - The Ground (deserves the rave comments here)
BVSC presents Manuel Guajiro Mirabal - a nice late night session, a tribute to Arsenio Rodríguez
Hélène Grimaud - Rachmaninov, Chopin piano concertos, etc. (very definitely not just a pretty face!)

Interesting lot, Huw !
Can you share your experience with Saluzzi/Christensen ? Sounds appealing to me. Can't agree more on Grimaud. My guess is she deserves an anti-mob campaign (look at Amazon.de reviews: There's a battle going on...) . She's both a victim of "hyping" and "mobbing", currently. After I've seen her play live, my verdict is clear: One of the 10ish top players, today.

cheers
Stefan
