He passed me by in the late '60s early '70s. It's really good to find some new excellent music from that era.

Me and Mr. Johnson - Eric Clapton

Posted on: 09 December 2015 by Steve J

The third of his first three albums. As with his other albums it's an eclectic mix of styles but this one is a little more introspective and folky.

I came across this on Amazon for a reasonable price. I contains Derek & Clive Live, Come Again, Ad Nauseum and Rude & Rare. I hadn't listened to them since the seventies but I'm pleased I did. Obviously very unPC these days and obviously full of unnecessary profanities designed to shock in those more prudish days of Mary Whitehouse but there is some very clever comedy. It made a pleasant change.

Peter Cook was a fellow Torquay Grammarian who I had the pleasure of meeting at a school prize giving when he was a guest of honour.

Steve, I don't think it was "designed to shock" because the first album, at least, was not created for public consumption. I think "uninhibited" is a better description of the material. Even in the pre-PC 1970s, there were limits on what could be said, and D&C exceed every limit: racism, sexism, religion, violence, bad language, etc etc.

The later stuff contains a lot of rage and bitterness, especially on Cook's part. But all of it is hilarious; and some sketches, such as "Horse Racing" on Ad Nauseam, are very witty.

Great voice. If you like this check out his work with the Steel Drivers, bit more country and bluegrass but well worth the effort.

Thanks for recommendation - Tidal is breaking up at moment (normal for this time of day for me unfortunately) so I'll have a look tomorrow.  BTW I came across this one in A Guardian review of best "Alt Country" albums from earlier this year.  Played it straight through twice on Tidal earlier - usually a good sign.  Don't know if you're familiar ?

$1.83 all the way from Green Street Books in California (via Amazon) - a bargain .  Great album.

From the good value Original album series, only £9.99 for five CDs. The group was formed from members of two of my favourite late '60s bands, Savoy brown and Black Cat Bones.

Pleasantly surprised this played as HDCD

Rush. Counterparts.

Green Day. Shenanigans.

Four dollars for each of these, in like new condition. The Green Day was still sealed. CDs have gotten so cheap I'm willing to take a punt on music I'd likely have passed on only a couple of years ago when it was twice the price.  Five years ago it was three times the price.
