Rachmaninov: Transcriptions | Corelli Variations - Olga Kern (piano)

It is very strange.  I do not watch CNN or MSNBC yet in my house it just seems to be Russia, Russia, Russia.  Mainly Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky as of late among others.  And the collusion conspiracy theories of late must have caused me to go mad?  Pretending to be an oligarch (poor as a church mouse except with refined musical taste) I spent a king's ransom on this disc because it has my latest musical obsession on it - a Rachmaninov transcription of Tchaikovsky's Lullaby Op. 16 No. 1.  Rachmaninov turns it into a beautifully dark lullaby and this is enhanced by the original key Tchaikovsky set this music to in g-flat minor.   G_FLAT MINOR !  This is such a rare key.  Almost unheard of.  This is a piece I will learn this winter somehow.

Rachmaninov and Olga Kern examples below.  Another wonderful recording is Polina Osetinskaya.

Steve Earle's latest. On a first listen it seems like one of his best.

2013 shm  Japanese edition it' s a  real  luxury mini box,  but sonically wise it's pretty laid back and lacking in dynamics.

I much prefer the ordinary Eu edition.
