The Essential Jefferson Airplane - the first CD is great; stuff from Takes Off and Surrealistic Pillow in partic. This was S.F.'s great claim to fame as a scene in the 60's. Not that band with the skeleton theme, although they had their moments...

Yes, I'm an auld hippie.

The last CD I bought was also the first album I ever bought; War Of the Worlds (Remastered). Almost worth it for Richard Burton alone.

Also recent, Ry Cooder: Chavez Ravine (which has a thread all of its own now) and Ali Farke Toure/Toumani Diabate: In The Heart Of The Moon-which deserves one, magical music.

Wayne Shorter - Beyond the sound barrier. Excellent, can see this being one of my top albums of the year.

Mangelsdorff / Andersen / Favre - Triplicity. Based on sjust's recommendations here and at Amazon. Still to listen, massive thunderstorm here so everything powered down

Alanis Morisette - Jagged Little Pill Acoustic. Not sure about this one, needs a couple more spins

T. Rex - Born to Boogie. Marvellous stuff, especially live CD.

Glenn Gould - The 1955 Goldberg Variations, birth of a legend. Wanted the booklet, not sure how mnay versions I have of this now - split between vinyl, cassette and CD.

Have they? They were alive and well in Leamington Spa on Saturday, and were kind enough to sell me the Clor album.

I also go to their store in Bath occasionally, but that doesn't seem to do much business.

I have gotten behind on recent purchases, so to catch up ...

The Clarks -" Between Now and Then" a retrospective of terrific guitar-pop by a band from Pittsburgh PA that has been around for 15 years or so. The purchase included a "bootleg" disc from some of the live shows. Rob James on guitar is a personal favorite and I have become attached to Scott Blasey's vocal style - play this alot.

Alanis Morisette - "Jagged Little Pill-Acoustic" As I am aging, as with this, I often like the quieter arrangements. The original is a disc I would pull-out 5-6 times a year and enjoy immensely so it has been nice revisiting this. While waiting for the release of JLP-A, I got AM MTV Unplugged which I personally prefer slightly to JLP-A. I like the arrangements a little better and her vocals are stronger on MTV-U in my opinion, plus includes some songs not on JLP.

Chris Jones - "Roadhouses and Automobiles" This was received in an exchange with Stefan (sjust). Play this frequently - I uploaded it on my Yamaha HDD along with some of Kelly Joe Phelps most recent, put in on shuffle and love it. Their styles overlap but are far from identical. But it is road-worn blues and when I am in the mood, I just revel in it.

Carole King - "The Living Room Tour" double-disc acoustic sets with many songs from over the years. The voice, never more than adequate (in the same way as say a Randy Newman) is showing its 62-year age, but what a songbook this lady has been involved in creating. Worth it for the memories alone.

Bill Deasy - "Chasing Down A Spark" Bill's newest, one of my favorite singer-songwriters who's current band includes Rob James (of The Clarks-above) on guitar. This Pittsburgh PA home-boy just keeps releasing great music.

Lucinda Williams - "Live At The Fillmore" You either love LW or you don't. Smokey vocals, down on your luck attitude and a great backing band - there is some really good stuff here if you are a fan.

Jason Mraz - "Mr A-Z" his newest, I love it, particularly the last 6 songs. Jazzy pop, not far removed from a J Rouse sound. Was excellent live on a recent Pdx date.

Good listenin'

O Brother, Where Art Thou? - the soundtrack to the Coen Brothers' film. It has a wonderful version of 'Down to the River to Pray' sung by Alison Krauss, and as for the Soggy Bottom Boys.....

Marvellous, even if I am five years late in getting it.

Mr Halibut

You might like the 'Cold Mountain' soundtrack. Not as good but a similar idea (and same team behind it I believe). Has a couple of tracks by Jack White, and some Alison Krauss too.
