the Stones, baby; the Stones
Rolling Stones, A Bigger Bang; I've only listened to half of it, but it appears that the Stones, musically, are in rude good health. Rockin'.

Michael Stanley (and the Midlife Chryslers) - "American Road"
More of what I expect from MS, solid Americanized rock and roll - girls, love, cars, late nights, broken hearts.
The man has over 20 album releases in a thirty-five + year career, he is (still) doing something very right.

Hawkwind - Take me to your Leader. Finally it has been released. They recorded this back in 2004. And have played tracks at recent gigs. It's playing now and I rate it as three/four out of five. Hints of their "club" scene ventures a few years back.
And for those looking in from the hifi corner there are some deep lows which my sbl's have been dredging up.

And following on - track six "Digital Nation" is now playing. Stunningly good - this is early early Hawkwind at their very best. Very mellow.

Kraftwerk, Trans-Europe Express; what a brilliant album! I always sort of laughed at these guys in the 70's (being a prog-head, if it wasn't Crimso/Genesis/Yes/ELP etc., you know, "real" musicians, I couldn't be bothered); I see now how influential they have been on the synth-pop/techno/ambient etc. scene...

Tori Amos
"Auditorium Theatre, Chicago IL 04.15.05" (2 cd)
"Royce Hall Auditorium, LosAngelesCA 04.25.05" (2 cd)
If you are a fan, these are "authorized" live recordings from Tori's Sinsuality Tour (solo).
Just Tori's mesmerizing vocals and playing on a variety of keyboards, the Bosendorfer primarily.
If you like live recordings, these are worth it.

The latest four CAN SACD hybrid remasters:
Soon Over Babaluma
Future Days
Tago Mago
Landed.
At last CAN (in the digital domain sounds like it did on vinyl (or possibly even better... I don't know, my original vinyls are unplayable)
The albums have been remastererd by members of the band and lont time associate John Podmore and, although I have not heard the SACD layer, the red book layer sounds absolutely brilliant... there is just no cmparison with the original CDs.

The Ozrics are excellent musicians - I've got some of the early stuff - The bits between the bits is my favourite.

I've just bought CD reissues of two Bill Fay records from the early 1970s, on the strength of rave reviews in Mojo. (Think Dylan, Nick Drake et al.)
No, I'd never heard of him either!
But pretty good so far.

Winterreise, Brendel/Fischer Dieskau. Inspirational. Still haven't acquired the latest installment of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies's Naxos Quartets; I must put this to rights!

After a fallow period two excellent buys
Iron+Wine/Calexico In the Reins EP. Brilliant, deserves a thread of its own (so has).
Laura Veirs: Year of Meteors. Consistently interesting modern folk, possibly even better than 'Carbon Glacier' on first few listens. A bit more commercial without ever being predictable.

The best of Willie Nelson.
I picked this up for 6 quid in Woolworths as a speculative buy, having heard almost none of his music in the past. It's bloody brilliant and I can't stop playing it.
Must buy more - any recommendations gratefully received.

My 2 last ones are:
"Just You, Just Me" from lady Ranee Lee and gentleman Oliver Jones, very good jazz vocal/piano minded record.
Michael Buble eponym's album, the wife's record. I'm under the law here that says "you get one, you buy me one too".
The two next are:
From young composer/performer/producer/Quebec's musical genius Steve Barakatt's "The Best Inspirations", promissed to be a very good modern piano record.
From Celine Dion (comming by the 4th of October) a compilation named "Je Ne Vous Oublie Pas" including 30 of her best french hits + 3 new french songs. If you like what Celine do in english, and would like to discover her in her native language, i think it's an album you should grab.
Bye.

David Gray "Life In Slow Motion" (dual disc)
I am a DG fan, so I am biased, however, my initial reaction is this is slightly over-produced. On the DVD side there is a documentery from the recording sessions and some killer short versions of the tracks with just voice/guitar or voice/piano, before the "production" was added. There are some great songs here and I expect I will grow to accept the production as DG current vision of his music.
Alanis Morissette - "Feast On Scraps" (1-cd,1-dvd)
dvd - I was hoping for some straight concert footage from Holland 2002 but it is interspersed with commentery and apparently, in an attempt to discourage making audio discs of the dvd soundtrack, the sound quality is intentionally varied during given songs from hi to lo fi (ie professional v. bootleg) Artsy, but it sucks.
cd - very rockin' for the most part, some good stuff recorded during the "Under Rug Swept" sessions. Includes a killer acoustic version of "Hands Clean".

Rolando Villazón - arias from Gounod and Massent, lovely voice but not made my mind up about the mix on the CD - orchestra is sometimes overpowering
Laura Veirs - Year of Meteors, not as immediately engaging as Carbon Glacier. Needs a few more listens I think
Brad Mehldau - Day is done, disappointing
Manu Katché - The Neighbourhood, could be in top 10 for the year. Nothing original here, just a great quintet with, dare I say it, a very "Kind of Blue" type of groove
Bobo Stenson - Goodbye, excellent
Monk and Coltrane - Live at Carnegie Hall, 1957. Just excellent, absolutely top 10 and just too short.
Stokowski Symphonic Transcriptions - on Naxos and something of a bargain for such great music. Nothing fancy or complicated, just a good CD and great in the car.
