Yesterday I picked up:
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Howl (- sounds great on 1st background listening in kitchen whilst cooking!);
Neil Young - Praerie Wind - Good but perhaps relies rather too much on structures used to good effect on Harvest Moon;
Paul Simon - Graceland Remaster - a fantastic record which I know inside out from vinyl;
Elgar's Violin Concerto - Nigel Kennedy / Vernon Handley - not yet listened to - this one is for tomorrow!

Mozart Flute and Harp Concerto. Two VPO soloists, VPO, Munchinger on Decca. I have failed to find a really satisfactory performance of this, and I hope that this performance is fine. I got it a week ago, and loaned it away even before playing it, due to a conversation about the classics with a heavy metal loving friend! I refered him to the slow movement as a top starting point with the classical style! I hope I was right.
The coupling is the two Flute Concertos.
Anyhow, I am still hoping that it gets the music right. Fredrik
Dear Fredrik
Karl Mnchinger was a great conductor, now sadly forgotten in our rush for period performances. I own a number of his Bach recordings, and I have heard him live twice, the first time performing The Art of Fugue, the second time performing Mozart Flute Concerto nr.1 (with Jean-Pierre Rampal) and the Jupiter Symphony. His Mozart was, if possible, even more shining than his Bach. What do you thimk of the recording? Werner Tripp (on the CD if Im not mistaken) should be excellent.
Regards,

Dear pe-zulu,
It is splendid in every way! It is just so natural, and completely unforced in the way it unfolds. The slow movement, which often sounds artificially phrased and excessively sweet, is less moulded than usually, and flows gently and some what more deeply than usual, and becomes a real node of stillness (not static of course, but emotionally strong and steadfast) between to outer movement wich are of course gaity in music! Really a sort of perfection.
The rest of the disc has the two Flute Concertos played by W Bennett with the English Chamber Orchestra under G Malcolm, and as recorded these sound more muscular than the VPO! It is another approach altogether, and rather more on the surface, which is fine, but it is much rarer to find such depths found as Mucnchinger and his esteemed soloists do in what is always called lightweight Mozart - the Flute and Harp Concerto.
You see I am very happy to find this, dear pe-zulu.
All the best from Fredrik
PS: For anyone else interested in this the release is Decca Sequenza 440 080 2

If I lived near you I would take the tickets off your hands.
I've been to gigs before from band who I've never heard of (Hot Club of Cowtown) and always enjoyed it, good way to hear a band and a night out anyway

Haim, Stefan,
I can sense you are interested in ECM recordings... I bought this one a couple of weeks ago...very good percusion....and acoustics...I, played aswell in a Naim session here in Vienna (long-tone hifi):
contemporary music of Nik Bartsch’s Ronin, featuring Sha, Contrabass and bass clarinets, Bjorn Meyer bass, Kaspar Rast , drums and Andi Pupato percussion. ECM records 1939. A superb experience.
regards and...
naimly yours
