Pearl Jam - "Pearl Jam"
Mixed results for me, I have always been a fan of the quieter side of PJ and there are a few great tracks on here. Gives Vedder a chance to "sing" instead of shout, and he can be quite good.

Keane - "Under The Iron Sea"
I like this much better than their first effort. Similarities to Coldplay but without C Martin's over-emoting on vocals.

Drive-By Truckers - "A Blessing and a Curse"
The Truckers doin' the Truck-thang. Southern rock at its finest.

Lambchop - "Damaged"
Its growin' on me. Still think "Is A Woman" is the best I have heard from them, this has some of those moments.

Pete Droge - "Under The Waves"
Pete written', singin' and playin' everything. One of the Pacific NW finest - you can find him with the likes of Stone Gossard (PJ)and as the least well-known third of the Thorns. The guitar player from his sometimes band the Sinners is Peter Stroud who tours with Sheryl Crow and Don Henley and the Sinner's bassist, David Hull, has just been chosen to fill in at that position for Aerosmith. Pete has written songs for most of Cameron Crowe's movie soundtracks and is a wonderful pop artist worth checkin' out.

Bob Dylan - "Modern Times"
Good stuff - I am no Dylan expert, but I think his last three albums have been great.

Ray LaMontagne - "Till The Sun Turns Black"
Incredible sophmore effort by this singer/songwriter. The track "Empty" alone is worth buying this disc for. Produced by the very very talented and tasteful Ethan Johns. Buy this !

FYI - on Sept 12th in the States, the new John Mayer disc "Continuum" will be released. The anticipation is building for me - I love this guy.

Good Listenin"

Jeff,

I assume you have seen the Sessions@AOL from the JM web site as a taster? Looks like Continuum will include some soulful classics on this viewing. I will place my order this week, along with Heavier Things. A talented guy indeed and thanks again to the Forum for recommending the earler JM albums.

I haven't taken the time to check out the Sessions@AOL, but have been enjoying frequent airplay here in Portland of a track from the album, "Waitin' On THe World To Change"

On Sept 8, will be one year since I saw him live with the Trio and only 1,400 capacity audience, a truely memorable show.

He is returning to the Portland area later in Sept this year but playing a 18,000 capacity venue (with Sheryl Crow co-headlining the show) - too many people for me.

If you haven't checked it out and like his pop stuff, "On Any Given Thursday" is a great live show, on either double-cd or dvd.

Regards,
Jeff A

On EMI: Beethoven's Eroica. Klemperer, Philharmonia (1954/5 recordings) with the overtures Leonore Nos 1 and 2.

On Decca: Beethoven Eroica and Fifth Symphonies. Erich Kleiber and the Concertgebeouw in 1950 and 1953.

On BBC Legends: Haydn's Military and Clock Symphonies with Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphasis on Themes by CM von Weber. Live concert recordings under Eugen Jochum with the LPO and LSO in the seventies!

All great music, but all a bit Konservative, perhaps! [Smiley].

Dear Fredrik,

Can't wait to hear how you find the Jochm - that disc has been tempting me for a while now (you know, after all, how much I value his London cycle).

I will e-mail you (particularly re E Kleiber).

The prize disc is the BBC Legends one, though I find something very special in the Klemperer set as well. In Kleiber's case I prefer the VPO reading of the Eroica to this earlier Concertgebeouw one, and it also happens to be better recorded. The Fifith contained here-in I have already, and it seems to be the same transfer, though the new one claims to be a fresh effort! Maybe the old one was just fine enough! [Smiley]. {Edit: It is a new transfer, and on direct comparison it is not as fine. It is brighter, harder and this spoils the balances of violins to lower woodwinds. The old issue was a full priced Decca France Import and was VERY expensive, but I bet it has been withdrawn by now].

I think I shall have to make a new Thread on the Haydn... It is some of the finest playing I have encountered on records or in the concert hall...
