Whilst in Dublin last week, completed my Rory Gallagher CD remaster collection at good price, with

Blueprint
Tattoo
Against the Grain
Photofinish

So I now have the whole RG official catalogue on vinyl (as available) and CD. Extravagence!

The first two of the above I also have on original release CD. In comparison, I have found the remasters to be a lot more open and natural sounding - 'recorded yesterday' so to speak, rather than 30+ years ago.

This is a pleasant surprise, because the most recent official release - the 'Big Guns' best-of collection (all tracks remastered) - I found hard, harsh and over-emphasised.

Buy with confidence. Enjoy some great Irish R'n'B!

James,

Which CD editions of his live albums are the best?

Hi Steve -
I can't give you a definitive answer in that Irish Tour is the only CD I have in both 'original' and 'remastered' formats.

I have the remastered version as part of the 'Let's Go To Work' boxed set (Live in Europe, Irish Tour, Stage Struck, Meeting With the G-Men). These were remastered a few years ago, like the studio albums, and certainly feel like they have a gentle/subtle touch to them - especially Live in Europe and Irish Tour (by the time of Stage Struck, there's the in-yer-face smash-and-grab drumming of Ted McKenna to deal with, rather than the jazzier style of both Wilgar Campbell and Rod de'Ath; and G-Men is clearly a glorified bootleg).

But comparing the two versions of Irish Tour, I would say that the remastered is better - again, more open and natural, etc.

When I visited Jon Honeyball in the summer, the opening of 'Live in Europe' was listened to at a fairly exacting volume(!) on his CDS/Hi-Line/52/6-pack/DBLs. Messin' with the Kid - simply extraordinary - took me right back to the Gaumont, Ipswich, January '79 and others!!

I have now read up on the remastering. Rory himself before he sadly died was involved in the preliminary work on remastering Photofinish - the last album to go on to CD, the first of the remasterings. This is very successful. And it certainly feels like the remastering of the other albums in the 1997-2000 period made use of the 'notes' from the man himself. There is a gentleness of touch that seems absent from, say, 'Big Guns' (which, to me, feels more like it's been remastered to be a hard rock album).

I have no hesitation in recommending the remastered Live in Europe and Irish Tour; and am not sure that Stage Struck and G-Men are available un-remastered so to speak!

Hope this is helpful,
James

Did you have a good time in Dublin James?

Did you get to any gigs?

Thanks James, I need to get to grips with some of the CDs. I had the vinyl and one CD copy of "Live in Europe" that I heard was a bit overblown and had extra tracks - but I'll stick at it. Sounds like the Irish Tour is a good place to start. Loved him live, saw him more times than I care to remember.

Cheers,

Steve.

Thanks, SJB -
We had a GREAT time in your fair city - at Norwich airport on the way out we sensed that it was going to be a good one, because the Force was with us (check out the aircraft's registration; Mrs JWM prepares to board):

The only limiting factor was a resurgence of my chest infection; so whilst we got out and about during the day (have to say loved the Cafe En Seine), in the evenings we stayed within easy reach of the hotel by Christchurch Cathedral.

But we very much enjoyed a couple of sessions, with music, at the Brazen Head, supping the North Star; and at the Porterhouse, trying a bit of everything! and then off to the nearby restaurants.

The only day we had to scratch was day trip to Cork for the Rory Trail, but had a compensatory photo under the bronze Strat at Rory Gallagher Corner!

Irish hospitality is really great! Finally managed to get in touch with my old friend Kieran (at the airport on the way out!) asked to meet up for a drink or two and he insisted on spending the whole of the next day showing us round Trinity College (his alma mater), and various sites, drove us out to Phoenix Park, the TC Boat House on the Upper Liffey (well, it's important to us).

Again, we had a really great time - I recommend Dublin to all Forum members (probably best not all at once). We'll be back... Gigs next time (your list is tucked away safely)!

Don't think the 'Let's Go to Work' boxed set has extra tracks (in fact Irish Tour has fewer). We still listen to the vinyl, but my recent CD upgrades means that this is the listening medium of choice at the moment... And the remastered CDs do feel a bit more 'dynamic' than the LPs, but not overblown - perhaps it's the Hi-Line bringing the 'overblown' under control?!
