On a related note, I've recently got the DGM re-issue of In The Court... (2004) which is the first to use the original master tape (thought lost but found again). It's the dog's, even compared to the 30th Anniversary edition.

The slowest played slow movement of op. 106 I have heard until now. In the booklet Korstick explains why: That metronome indications by the composer for subjective reasons always are to fast. I don´t think Norrington agrees. Surprisingly there is in Korsticks interpretation a lot of momentum even at this slow pace.

Dear pe-zulu,
I still have not listened to it yet. The only references that I have is the Gilels DG boxset and the latest Brendel Phillips boxset, which is based on a live performance. I like these performances very much. I also have the Gulda and Backhaus (Decca) sets, which I don't listen to as much.
I had a quick read through the notes on the CD book and he seems a bit "upset" about the comment on his eccentric approach to this part of the Sonata. However, the interviewer before saying this suggests that he maintains the excitement and grabs the listener's ears even so.
These sonatas really do something for me and I never get bored with them.
I have never heard of Michael Korsick since last week. What I have heard so far from the discs I've bought today is pretty good and look forward to the rest of his cycle on Oehms classics. In fact, I look very much forward to going to see him live in the Frankfurt Alte Oper early next year as well as Grigori Sokolov.
Regards
Mark

Mark - Paul Lewis's recent recording of the 106 is well worth checking out - there is a wonderful weight and passion to it.
Poul - I'm quite certain Norrington wouldn't agree. I read something recently where he went on about how there should be minimum speed limits in Beethoven. While I'm not completely out of sympathy with historical movement (and think Beethoven often works extremely well at the marked tempi), I'm afraid I have no time for him.
I went a little wild with CDs on Friday. I picked up a box, a recent addition to Sony's Original Jacket collection, of George Szell conducting Mozart, two RCA budget boxes - one of Toscanini's Verdi, the the other of Andrew Davis's Dvorak symphonies - and Sony's new budget issue of Stravinsky conducting his own work.
regards, Tam

Certainly seconded. I expect to receive Vol.III within two weeks.

You chose wisely. As I have written earlier his HIP LvB Symphony set is boring into the extreme.

I got this recently. Stravinsky is not excactly my favorite composer, but I couldn´t resist the low cost, and was afraid that I would regret later if I didn´t use the offer now. Let me see if I get the time to consume this magnum-box.

... the two greatest 106s out there! I'm also fond of Kempff's mono recording. I think Gilels has it - by a whisker!

And very fine it is too (I picked mine up a week or two back). But what I really can't wait for is vol.4 as I want to hear his take on the op.49/2

Those were precisely my feelings on the matter - for £23 (about £1 a disc) it just seemed crazy not to get a historical document like this.

The Lewis cycle was recommended to me when I was buying the Korstick CDs.
Thanks for the recommendation.

Crossroad by Russian prog band Apple Pie. These talented musicians are strongly influenced by Spock's Beard and to a lesser extent Dream Theater. Quite derivative music, but good nonetheless.
