Star wars - Return of the sith - absolute crap!

Sat and watched it with my two youngest sons. We've had a bit of a bad day - my eldest son broke his arm earlier this morning and my wife and I have spent all day in casualty with him whilst the two younger sons stayed with their Gran. The eldest son and my wife are staying in hospital tonight, so I said the others could watch a DVD of their choice. But it sure took some enduring!

Moby Dick

One of those films I had seen scenes from, especially that of the pulpit with Orson Welles, but never watched in its entirety.

I was looking for something for the family to watch on Friday and finding nothing that really attracted me bought this and 'Field of Dreams'.

Moby Dick is a powerful piece of drama, one man's hatred against a force of nature. Directed and co-written by John Huston starring Gregory Peck & Richard Basehart with the secondary & bit parts filled with well known UK character actors.

I have to confess that I had not realised the themes and text that had been lifted straight from Melville into Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan. I would even swear that James Horner lifted the start of the main theme for that film from Moby Dick.

A great film? A great story? I have never read the book, but this has encouraged me to get it, which is probably endorsement enough.

The best of luck to you. For me, the book is ruined by the fact that for so much of the time it wants to be a whaling textbook (and several hundred pages of that can get pretty tedious). Well spotted about the wrath of kahn though (I'd take that any day over the book).

Getting to a point where it would not matter unlessthere was nice narrative soundtrack, being more and more (or less) unable to see even road numbers on an atlas to give someone directions. Where was that ordder form for a fine white cane?

Reviewing this, I guess I need a good magnifying glass? Any recomendations, or would Boots the chemist be the best place to make the purchase?

A Matter of Life and Death

Got the 9 disc Pressburger & Powell box set from HMV on my way home this evening from HMV for £19.99.

I saw this film when I was in my early teens, about thirty years ago, my memories were somewhat confused!

Excellent film.

Mars Attacks is a hoot.

I have to admit I had seen the film three times before I realised that the casino owner was also played by Jack Nicholson

Yes, I think there is a lot of truth in that film and I'm very surprised it got made.

Chicago

...again! Must admit I liked it more this time around. Perhaps it's because I haven't watched it in some time. Very good indeed.

Good night,and, good luck

Lucky Number Slevin

Both very good films, well crafted and acted.

Last night watched Kill Bill 2 again: personally, I prefer this to the first, though opinions are divided about which is the better film.

Over the last month ...
1. Spellbound - enjoyable documentary
2. Firewall - excellent movie ... had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end!
3. Syriana - excellent movie, even if it is hard to follow at times!
4. Eight Below - enjoyable Disney movie
5. The World's Fastest Indian - excellent performance by Anthony Hopkins. May be is most enduring performance. Highly Recommended!!!
6. Rumour Has It - a good laugh
7. The Matador - very good movie ... very different role for Pierce Bronson ... excellent performance!
8. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow ... Amazing digital effects and sound. Widescreen Review called this movie "Reference Quality" superb sound, special effects, music score, cinematography. I am in total agreement. I recorded this on my HD PVR (DD5.1 sound and OAR) ... it is a keeper! The HD transfer was excellent. A must addition to your reference DVD library. This is one movie that should be released on HD DVD and Blu-Ray!
7. Glory Road - very good movie ... true story
8. The Long Kiss Goodnight - great action thriller!

over the last few weeks:

Band of Brothers. quality stuff. full of visual and intestinal impact.

Layer Cake. Saw on cable, missed a few scenes. a great performance (if not entirely a stretch) for Michael Gambon. jeez - are the bad guys driving RS4's now? impossibly cool.
made up for by the ending - outstanding. At least it's not another guy richie caper movie.

Munich. Instense. possibly Speilbergs best movie, visually - the way the light is captured, attention to detail in the props etc for the time. Bana is excellent, a performance to rival 'Chopper'.

and more recently with a bout of the flu...

Man on fire. Denzel Washington plays a bad boy again. This one with gratuitous violence, explosions, and novel ways of abducting, interrogating, and dispatching baddies. a nice supporting performance from Christopher Walken playing the middle-aged gringo enjoying lis later life in Mexico. I'm biased - the location shots in and around Mexico City were outstanding. I rated this one as quality entertainment, a little above the generally dire output from holywood these days. cautiously receommended.

Spooked - the film inspired by Ian Wishart's 'The Paradise Conspiracy', a tale of intrigue based around the story of a computer dealer who bought a job-lot of used equipment from a bank down here some years ago, attempted to broker information found back to the bank, and mysteriously died the evening of collecting his settlement from the bank. A reasonable adaptation, although likely of limited appeal outside of neuzilland. proceed with caution.

The Statement. Another quality portrayal from 'his name is Michael Caine'. Lightweight plot set to life by Jeremy Northam and Tilda whassername makes it all a little bit 'Da Vinci Code', painfully so. Still, doen't spoil the enjoyment. nice feel of france. avoid high expectations, may be a pleasant surprise.

and a couple of others I can't currently remember.

Ghost Dog:Way of the Samurai - very good, laughted lots at the sly digs, clever action and I particularly liked the idea of a person who disappears in the noise of every day life.
