Music Room
I'm on a huge kick at the moment. The albums I'm enjoying most are: Strung Out in Heaven Take it from the Man! Their Satanic Majesties Second Request Their back catalogue is quite substantial. Which albums should I explore next?
How long can the band coninue to reinvent and sell their music? There was the Anthology sereies, "Love", "1" (all hugely successful), the stereo CD remasters, the mono CD remasters, the stereo vinyl, the mono vinyl, and now Sgt Pepper's 50th Anniversary. I applaud their spins on repackaging, love the outtakes, but ultimately it's the same old music dressed-up in a modern suit. No doubt a Golden Anniversary White Album is currently in the works. Are The Beatles the paragon of popular music...
This was shown two days ago on BBC Four (and I suspect it will have been shown elsewhere in the world recently too): http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08t9yvk/arena-american-epic-4-the-sessions Similar in feel to The 1930s Jazz Recording Project on Lake Records, this used a restored Western Electric recording system (microphones, valve amps and direct-to-disc cutter) to record rural American music of various kinds, exactly as was done in the 1920s. There's some great music and musicians...
Yesterday I was shown a twitterfacesphere thread started by my daughter discussing a playlist suitable for me at the Fathers Day barbecue that I am not supposed to know about. It went on to eloquently extol my excellent & dodgy music preferences & how its influenced her in the past & carried through to today. (wow that was a mix of honour & humble) Enough to say Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Telemann & Chopin have stuck somewhat more than has the jazz genre. Anyhow, back to the...
On my annual wind down, I am reading the Eponymous book by Billy Bragg. I find it fascinating. I was born in 1953, so I remember a fair bit, but his explanation of the 'Skiffle' phenomenon is an ear opener for me, and while I need my annual break, he has given me a much stronger reason than usual to get back to the listening chair. Highly recommended holiday reading (and reading generally) to all.
...because I've seen it all. Gunhild Carling https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RbVuDuCYMY SITG
I've been listening to Youn Sun Nah's new album 'She Moves On' downloaded in 24/96. It is just so beautiful, her take on the lesser known Jimi Hendrix track Driftin' is just sublime with great guitar playing from Marc Ribot. There are some really inspired cover choices including Lou Reed's Teach The Gifted Children, Joni Mitchel's Dawntreader and Paul Simon's She Moves On. I see that her back catalogue is on special offer at Qobuz and this album topped their download chart for a while, it's...
First track out today. I like it! Album out 2nd June on CD and double vinyl.
Rory Gallagher - Ulster Hall Belfast 1972. No one else was playing in Belfast at the time because of the "troubles". Rory Gallagher made regular visits and his new year concerts were legendary. I had no real interest in Rory and really only went because my friends Robert and George had a spare ticket. Never been to a concert previously and didn't know what to expect. As I write this now some 40 + years later I can still sense the atmosphere, feel the electricity and excitment and the almost...
Kraftwerk performed in the Waterfront Hall here in Belfast on Sunday Night. The concert started out well and the rendition of Man Machine was impressive. Then they started to experience dropouts with their sequencer. Tracks became disjointed with some of the sound streams out of sync and tune. Autobahn was a disappointment as the bass and the drum machine were competing and the bass line was not in the same key as the rest of the track. The result was a muddy rendition of the track and I was...
There seems to be a lot of net chatter about the limited dynamic range and level of compression used for this new remaster. The DR figures I've seen are DR8 for the main album (CD1) with "Mr Kite" registering at DR6 and DR10 for the outtakes/remixes of Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane (CD2). I'm guessing that these have been posted out in the wild by early buyers. While DR figures aren't the whole story, it is disappointing that such an iconic album may not be getting the TLC it deserves with...

Just heard the sad news that this brilliant artist has died, too young. A Dylan interpreter par excellence with a soulful voice who never made a bad record. Try:
I am a bit of a beginner when it comes to downloads and being a bit frustrated that some of the downloads I wanted to buy particularly some Analogue Productions DSD are only available in the US. So my question is has anyone managed to buy any here in the U.K. and if not what are the best alternatives?
On another thread in the Streaming Audio forum, Bart counted that he had 94 commercially released Grateful Dead albums on his music server. I have none. So, recommend me a GD album to introduce myself to this oeuvre. I'm hoping I'll be able to access some of this via Tidal.
Sad to hear that Chris Cornell, of Soundgarden and other groups, has passed away at the age of 52.
I managed to blag a press ticket to yesterday's preview. I must say I was very impressed. There are about 350 artefacts - old frilly shirts, letters, posters, gadgets, photos, covers, instruments - on display at this exhibition, which tracks the band's career from 1965 through to 2014's swansong TER . Like the V&A's Bowie exhibition, you need to don a pair of bluetooth headphones, which change from room to room and from exhibit to exhibit - although I have to say that both the...
… when Sgt Pepper taught the band to play. Should the record be be played by this?
Following the Music on Special Offer and the recent Hi Res Download threads, I did a little homework on the new Paul Weller 'A Kind of Revolution' (non-deluxe version) and this is what I found:- 24/44 16/44 7Digital £10.99 £7.99 Qobuz £13.64 £11.82 HDTracks £15.50 Now I'm assuming a 24/44 is a 24/44 is a 24/44 all of the above are the same? Interesting commodity pricing and adds a new dimension to you get what you pay for or maybe you're paying for a better service. I wonder what the actual...
As per above, I have a ragtag collection of Sinatra albums from CD rips some of which are a bit 'iffy' in the SQ department. I know what albums I like but am keen, if possible, to replace some or all with 24-bit remasters. So any recommendations for 24-bit (& what to avoid if thats the case) many thanks.
I'm posting this in the Music room because its all about the music and looking at the categories I couldn't see a better place. Mod's move it if you like. I'm an architect. I'm about to design a piece of architecture to live in, for my family. To call it a house would be the equivalent of asking 1000 people how they listen to music and deciding that's how to listen to music. So bear with me. My aim is to put my balls on the line rather than make a sensible investment in terms of housing and...
Nothing I have bought this year so far has pleased like this lovely singer-songwriter folk/country album. Produced by Jeff Tweedy, and with subtle musical assistance from his friends, nothing ever dominates her luminous voice. Better than the 'Over and Even' from 2015, with a more varied palette. Try if you like Gillian Welch, Luluc or even Sandy Denny as there is a definite British folk lilt at times. Bruce
I posted a link to this cd on the "Bach for Beginners" thread, but after some thought, and a couple more listens, I thought I should start a separate thread. This young man was well received for his Chopin preludes, and rightly so IMO. Now as he turns to Bach, I can only say that he is deserving of even higher accolades. He plays as if he has lived with this music for decades. He avoids trying to make his piano sound like a harpsichord. His finger work is impeccable, but he goes much further...
Hey if you have a spare moment to check out some new music have a look at this new video and song shot in an old warehouse :-)
