Music on Special Offer Thread?

Posted by: sjt on 14 December 2016

I am wondering if it would be legit to have a thread in here dedicated to music album downloads from legitimate retailers that are currently on special offer.

As an example I was just looking through the what are you listening to mega thread just now and came across the Melody Gardot record because someone was listening to it. I have wanted this for a while but it was always expensive (about 20 quid). On a whim I went over to a place I usually go to buy music downloads and by a blind stroke of luck it was on special offer at just over half price. Deluxe edition is cheaper than the standard edition! I bought it straight away.

So I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread dedicated to posting albums that are on special offer at the moment with not-so-subtle hints as to where you could get them from, when the offer expires and how much is knocked off etc, so people could see instantly anything that was on special. It would certainly be a thread I would come back to often.

I did a search and couldn't find anything like this in the forum, but usually the searches on these forums are rubbish so this is not a guarantee!

There might need to be a few rules, e.g. the poster has no affiliation with the seller, only legitimate download shops / sites etc.

Just a thought still in the half-bakery...

Grrr  I bought the Sgt Pepper 24/96 for £22,  via special offer & US-$.     The Qobuz offer looks like a not to be missed FU,  my guess it will be 'corrected' PDQ when they notice it.

I put 24 in the search field, then narrowed the results down to stuff under a fiver, then filtered it further by genre and resolution. Still a lot to sift through, but perhaps worth the effort.

I’ve just found another way of searching: for these 49p albums, put in 0.49 as the search term, then filter by £0-£5. It currently brings up 59 albums, the vast majority of which have the hi res version currently at 49p (a few albums not, those having been brough up through having 0.49 in their name or cat no. Quite a few opera and electronica in there.

However, trying the same approach for 79p or 99p albums brings up many 1000s, far too many to browse through.

Thanks! That uncovered some 49p Ella Fitzgerald and Drake albums I hadn't found previously.

The R.E.M. box set prices have been "corrected", so it looks like someone at Qobuz has twigged.

I don’t know if these cheap prices are necessarily mistakes - e.g there is quite a scutch of Pavarotti albums opin the 49p group, but separately not like a box set. I think they just do these great deals from time to time to get people in - loss leaders I think they’re called, though I’ve no idea if there is a loss on them as it depends how they pay the record companies -could it be a percentage?

Looks like they have sussed Sgt Pepper and Ella Fitzgerald. Still shows 49p but defaults to full price when you try to buy.

With Qobuz being a French company perhaps it's part of the May-Macron negotiations. We pay £44 million for the Calais situation and they give us cheap music and the Bayeux Tapestry for a while.

It was good while it lasted. I've grabbed some more this morning. It's been a good few months for special offers - deliberate and accidental.

Posted on: 19 January 2018 by Innocent Bystander

But just discovered something not good: adding some of the 49p high res albums to my basket, I discovered they’re actually charging £25.49, so something wrong. I don’t know if it is past end of offer, or a mistake somewhere, although that is not the case with others.

curious - meanwhile be sure to check your basket before paying!

It's gotta be a mistake - if they were genuine intended offers with buy in from the record companies etc, I think they would be shouting from the rooftops to promote such fab prices!

Qobuz seem to have lost the plot this morning for sure.     The Sgt Pepper thats on for £0.49 is £32.49 at checkout,  compared to the £27'ish price they had earlier this week.

So I'm not so 'grrrr' with it now,  I bought mine from USA at £22.20 after Paypal FeX

It seems I’ve missed Sgt Pepper, but I’ve bought Wager’s ring cycle for £4.99, which is certainly a bargain. Thanks, Camlan.

I got mine this morning for 49p. Looks like they are resetting now.

Don't worry HH,  TBH the original 13 Sgt Pepper tracks are the only ones worth listening to.  The extra tracks, with the exception of the complete tracks of Strawberry Fields & Penny Lane,  are just a jumble of studio work.  Interesting if you are either a Beatle nut or understand studio work,  but heard once is enough

I like the remix in general,  stereo stage is so much better,  drums are exceptionally better,  not sure about the more prominant bass as it seems a little wooly,  vocals & guitars overall are cleaner/clearer.

Mind-boggling amount of metadata editing to be done. Worth it though. Someone at Qobuz is in for a bit of a b0llocking you'd think.

I know Bruckner is not everybody's cup of tea but the Barenboim/Staatskapelle Berlin cycle at £2.99 is not to be sneezed at either. Less than the price of a pint, the world has gone mad.

Yikes!

It did occur to me that I should feel guilty, but I've no idea why these prices cropped up and hey, sometimes nice things happen.  And to be fair, I nearly always go to Qobuz first when there's a download I want to buy, partially because things like this crop up sometimes and remind me that I quite like the company.

But the individual track downloading and metadata editing is what really banishes any guilt - I'm working for this stuff!

Has anyone had trouble downloading the Wagner?  I keep getting a fair way through and then my computer says the connection has been lost, so I have to start again.

Have you tried using their downloader? Last time I downloaded from them I did, and it brought down whole albums without trouble.

Is that the same as the general Qobuz application?  On my Mac that was the only thing I could see which might act as a downloader, but I didn't really want to install it in case it was just the streaming client.

As a first time user of the site it took me some time to sort out the downloading. Links to the downloader didn't work and it seemed like I would be there all night downloading individual tracks. It was only by chance that I found on one of the pages the option to download the whole album as a TAR file (zipped).

Mucho thanks to all those that made the Qobuz discoveries. Its Maria Callas all over again!

I got lots of stuff this morning. I have no idea whether the pricing is errors or what (why would it happen this time last year and today?), but I spend lots of money all year round with Qobuz on full price stuff*, so I think little perks like this are OK. Its my guess that that many people have bought a lot of stuff today they wouldn't buy at full price, so this is extra sales for Qobuz. As long as Qobuz are making a profit on the stuff they have sold at these bonkers prices, they win as well, and I hope this is the case.

*This is why I have a basic stereo - DAC V1 and NAP 100 - the money I am trying to save up to upgrade the stereo is spent on music!

Thanks from me too. Unbelievably good haul for under  a tenner including the Wagner.

Now to find the time to listen......

Many of my downloads have failed - large tar file of 10GB or more.

I just realised my Mac Mini has been going to sleep and losing wifi connection while I'm upstairs working.

May not be your issue but if you're doing other things while downloading it might be.

Posted on: 19 January 2018 by Harry

My first three TARs came down fine but all since have failed. Since I'm sitting in front of my PC working, I'm downloading individual tracks. Well, batches. A small inconvenience all things considered.
