Music on Special Offer Thread?

Posted by: sjt on 14 December 2016

I am wondering if it would be legit to have a thread in here dedicated to music album downloads from legitimate retailers that are currently on special offer.

As an example I was just looking through the what are you listening to mega thread just now and came across the Melody Gardot record because someone was listening to it. I have wanted this for a while but it was always expensive (about 20 quid). On a whim I went over to a place I usually go to buy music downloads and by a blind stroke of luck it was on special offer at just over half price. Deluxe edition is cheaper than the standard edition! I bought it straight away.

So I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread dedicated to posting albums that are on special offer at the moment with not-so-subtle hints as to where you could get them from, when the offer expires and how much is knocked off etc, so people could see instantly anything that was on special. It would certainly be a thread I would come back to often.

I did a search and couldn't find anything like this in the forum, but usually the searches on these forums are rubbish so this is not a guarantee!

There might need to be a few rules, e.g. the poster has no affiliation with the seller, only legitimate download shops / sites etc.

Just a thought still in the half-bakery...

I dare say we're all feeling a bit guilty if these are mistakes, but they may not be I suppose and Qobuz have always honoured any bargains which is very decent if they were errors.  Doubt we'd be bothered if this was a service offered by a huge multinational but I think we're all conscious deep down that the company had financial problems a few years ago, and when even the likes of the newer but bigger Tidal are having concerns raised about viability I'd hate to think that purchases like this could cause issues for the company or individuals.

Some of these items are dare I say it very niche products as the Callas collection was last year - I've looked at that ring cycle many times but would be unlikely to buy at £50, or even my sublime discounted price r several other offer prices in the last year or so but at the listed price I'll give it a go even if I listen to it once or never at all.  I'm no fan of some of the other bargains mentioned but for a very good price I'll give them a shot.  Perhaps that's the logic here - better to have many small value purchases from curious people who'd never pay full price than to have an occasional premium price purchase.  Again it also gets non-members to go to the site for a sniff and that may well drum up some more custom.

Many of us may also have previously purchased titles on vinyl/CD, even cassette, and have the music on several physical formats - little incentives might get us to purchase again.

The big stuff will only work from the Windows app for me.

It wasn't too intuitive how to use though: Log in > click on the tiny shopping cart at the top > hover over the picture of the set you want to download and click on the three dots > select download

The download queue should automatically operate then (the circle with the down-arrow next to the shopping cart.

It did occur to me that I should feel guilty, but I've no idea why these prices cropped up and hey, sometimes nice things happen.  And to be fair, I nearly always go to Qobuz first when there's a download I want to buy, partially because things like this crop up sometimes and remind me that I quite like the company.

But the individual track downloading and metadata editing is what really banishes any guilt - I'm working for this stuff!

Has anyone had trouble downloading the Wagner?  I keep getting a fair way through and then my computer says the connection has been lost, so I have to start again.

Finally got to bed about 4am... some downloads successful, some more needing track by track downloading.  Been at it correcting, re-loading TAR files this morning... but well worth the effort.

Thanks to those who've identified the ones I've bought, btw

I don't feel guilty.

Thanks to Nick I realised that the standard desktop app can be a downloader, and can download individual tracks in an automated fashion, so the issue with dropped downloads of .tar files was sorted.

Beware if using the app without checking settings though...  I didn't initially realise that the app also defaults to downloading at CD resolution, so HD files are transcoded to a lower bitrate.  There's an option in account settings to change it.

There do seem to be plenty of anomalies at the moment where Hi-Res is cheaper than 16/44 or even sublime.

Here are a couple at £2.99

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No.6

Valery Gergiev

Hi-Res 24-bit – 96.00 kHz

Released on December 30, 2014 by Philips

Main artist: Wiener Philharmoniker

Genre: Classical

DISTINCTIONS: Hi-Res Audio (January 2012)

Ludwig van Beethoven : Symphonies n°5 & n°7

Wiener Philharmoniker - Carlos Kleiber

Hi-Res 24-bit – 96.00 kHz

Released on December 23, 2014 by Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

Main artist: Wiener Philharmoniker

Genre: Classical

DISTINCTIONS: Discothèque Idéale Qobuz (May 2014) - Hi-Res Audio (April 2013)

Both fine albums. Gergiev's Tchaikovsky 6 is probably my favourite version. And if I recall correctly, the Kleiber Beethoven 5&7 was a Gramophone or Penguin prize winner.

Richard Wagner : Der Ring des Nibelungen

Wiener Philharmoniker - Sir Georg Solti

Hi-Res 24-bit – 44.10 kHz

INCLUDES: 1 Digital booklet

Released on November 10, 2014 by Decca

Main artist: Wiener Philharmoniker

Genre: Classical

Yikes!

Yikes indeed! I have the Hi-Res version of this on a Blu-Ray disc which came with the 200 Anniversary box set, but I have no way of ripping it and getting it into the downloads folder on my NS01. I have all three CD masterings of this recording, so should I buy this same recording again for a 4th time? Mmm....Probably not.

I decided to pick up the Beethoven, but since I don't like using Paypal, I had to add a bit more to reach the minimum card payment.  I found a DG set of Mendelssohn's symphonies 1-5 and a 7 disc set of Otis Redding live for 49p each.

Gosh.

And when Qobuz goes into liquidation due to large fees owned to record companies that for some reason cash receipts wouldn’t cover, well we know who to blame.

Is robbing the blind beggar okay as he doesn’t know he’s been robbed?

Qobuz a blind beggar?

That's harsh.

Still, I guess they can't be loved by everyone.

Posted on: 19 January 2018 by Innocent Bystander

I see the Mendelssohn has now changed from 45p to £45 - methinks a decimal point error has cost them a bit (though I probably wouldn’t have bought at even £4.50, but did at 45p).

Posted on: 20 January 2018 by Motel Blues

“Sgt. Pepper”, the Lennon and VU box sets, “Venus and Mars” and Diana Krall “Turn Up The Quiet” all currently in the Qobuz download top 10.

https://www.qobuz.com/gb-en/shop

Not 49p, but there’s still a few items that are significantly cheaper than their Sublime prices.

“The Rolling Stones In Mono”, 24/192, 15 discs, £21.99 or £62.99 with Sublime

https://www.qobuz.com/gb-en/al...stones/0001877133452

John Lennon “Signature Box”, 24/44.1, 11 discs, £18.49 or £54.99 with Sublime.

https://www.qobuz.com/gb-en/al...lennon/0060254707113

Also, £4.99 for my favourite Springsteen album “The Wild, The Innocent & The E. Street Shuffle” in 24/96 seems like a good deal, although perhaps that’s its regular price as it’s cheaper with Sublime.

EDIT: £4.49 from 7Digital!

If purchasing, it might be worth confirming the prices don’t magically increase when added to your basket, as some discovered yesterday.

Posted on: 20 January 2018 by Harry

None of the prices went up on me in the basket. Could be a mistake, could be genuine offers. Impossible to say.

I was going to say that I've shoveled hundreds into Qobuz down the years, but on reflection I think another zero is required. Frightening how it mounts up. Paying bargain prices for stuff that I would never buy at full RRP for, has been a mainstay of my music collecting and discovery since I was 11 years old and scouring sales bins for  LPs at 1/6.

It is reassuring to know that nothing has changed. Of course, what also has not changed is that any loss of profit for the industry and its distribution chain is always the fault of the buyer. Apparently, we don't buy enough stuff and we don't pay enough. If we avail yourself of special offers it only goes to show how dishonest we are. How very irritating for them.

John Lennon's "Gimme Some Truth" collection (72 tracks in flac) is currently on www.junodownload.com for £12.49...

That's just one example. Many other bargains on that site. It markets itself as a specialist dance site, but I've downloaded a lot of stuff from there.

If buying several albums at discount prices (ones I'd have never have considered buying otherwise) affects Qobuz's financial viability I'd be disappointed, but like you I used to love scouring the vinyl bargain bins and a good price would lead me to try things I'd not buy at full price with the benefit that if I actually enjoyed the artist I'd be far more likely to get their next releases at full price.  One could argue that the ubiquity of streaming plans lets you try before you buy these days (or not buy at all), but I suspect those of us who actually purchase music are rapidly becoming a tiny minority.

It'd be interesting to know with the streaming companies who also sell downloads what proportion of their revenue comes from monthly plans vs outright 'purchases'.

As one who has purchased so many things in duplicate on cassette/vinyl/CD and later Hi-Res download or beta/VHS/DVD/BluRay/HD-DVD/4kBluRay/iTunes SD/HD/4k I suspect my conscience is far cleaner than the majority who download illegally and don't give a damn, but the industry still hates me for wanting to 'format shift' or use legitimately purchased material fro personal consumption that suits my own personal AV set-up.  When will they learn?

Posted on: 20 January 2018 by Harry

My first cut price LP bargain was Jethro Tull's Benefit. Bought for pennies. Since then (1973) I've bought every format in every resolution of everything they've released. Plus the videos and DVDs. On balance I'd say the hook worked in the industry and to a much smaller extent, the artist's favour.

Qobuz are a business, not a sole trader, self employed Fred in a shed. They will be covered for something like this - assuming it was an accident.

Neither special offer nor pricing error as far as I can tell, Qobuz are currently selling John Coltrane's "Om" in 24/192 for £2.49:

Or you could get it from HDTracks for £19:

Thanks, downloading now. I have only ever listened to this once, more than 30 tyears ago, but for £2.49 I'll be interested to listen again.

Good one. Thank you from me too.

Not a special offer, but not too shabby a deal either: 7Digital are selling Herbie Hancock's "Crossings" in 24/192 for £3.99:

More non-special offers, this time at HiResAudio.

Todd Rundgren "The 70's Collection", seven albums, 24/96, £21.60, less than half 7Digital's price, albeit half their sampling rate too: https://www.highresaudio.com/e...-collection-remaster

Bruce Springsteen "The Album Collection, Vol. 1 (1973-1984)", seven albums, 24/44,1, less than half 7Digital and Qobuz's prices: https://www.highresaudio.com/e...tion-vol-1-1973-1984

Alela Diane - Cusp Qobuz £7.19, down from £10.79 High res.

DOH! After buying it I looked at 7digitial and they have the high res for £6.49! That will learn me to rush!

I have only listened to the Qobuz samples but it sounds fabulous from these.

Movie Soundtracks over on Qobuz "at a reduced price" : https://www.qobuz.com/gb-en/se...inter&i=boutique

Not specifically a special offer, but I've just bought William Basinski's "Vivian & Ondine" in 16/44,1 for 89p from 7Digital.

https://www.7digital.com/artis...n-and-ondine-5604260

Possibly this pricing anomaly is a result of the album consisting of a single 45 minute track, but 7Digital are also selling it on MP3 for £7.49
